After the Industrial Revolution, the rapid growth of industry caused the disconnection of human and nature and caused the devastation of the ecological environment which is the most fundamental background of the present society. Nature has provided a lot of resources to humans as a resource of social culture that is fundamentally given to human beings in basic production and activities and shows a crisis of limited ecological environment by considering nature as a material means. In order to find a continuous alternative to the natural environment and social culture that make imbalance according to the radical development of society, the architectural space where human beings and nature can coexist has begun to approach from ecological thinking. In addition, minimalism has emerged as a form of expression representing the nature and social phenomena surrounding us in modern society, which is the result of mixed aspects in light of pluralism. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the study by linking the architectural group SANAA, which is overlapped with the unification of architecture and nature and minimalism tendency, based on the characteristics of ecological minimalism architectural space, which shows the relationship between human society and nature as aesthetic aspect through the coexistence of ecological architecture with the surrounding environment in order to solve the universality of architecture and material desire for nature in modern society. As a research method for this, first, the theoretical consideration of ecological and minimalism trends and the understanding of the macroscopic trend of the times and each space through the paradigm and characteristics of the architecture are examined. After that, the characteristics of spatial expression derived from previous studies related to ecology and the new characteristics appearing in the relationship with spatial characteristics of minimalism are derived by arranging them based on keywords. Based on the new spatial characteristics of ecological minimalism derived from this, the examples of SANAA are analyzed to help better understanding of ecological minimalism space. This study is based on previous studies and literature review, and the specific research methods are as follows.Chapter 1 presents the background, purpose, scope and method of this study, and the flow chart of this study to see what method and order the overall development method of this study is proceeded. In chapter 2, it helps the overall understanding of ecological space and minimalism space by examining the theoretical concept, architectural background and spatial characteristics through the preceding studies and literature related to ecological and minimalism architectural space. In chapter 3, the concept of ecological minimalism and the modern flow are understood to examine the spatial characteristics of ecological minimalism shown through the integrated relationship between ecology and minimalism. Then, the keywords of the preceding studies related to ecological space in chapter 2 are summarized to derive new keywords, and combined with the characteristics of minimalism space to derive the characteristics of ecological minimalism. In chapter 4, based on the characteristics of ecological minimalism space, the study selected and analyzed the scope of the case from 2000s to the recent projects among the works of the architectural group SANAA, which expresses the minimalistic tendency and the relationship between nature, human beings and architecture. In Chapter 5 summarizes the above research contents and describes the significance and value of ecological minimalism space that this study has and describes the relationship with SANAA architecture that is analyzed by applying this characteristic.Ecological space is connected in terms of the fact that it forms an architectural space based on the fundamentality of ecological environment and forms a balance between human and nature, and the characteristics of minimalism that forms mutual sympathy between nature and human by concentrating on human psychology and surrounding environment rather than architecture or work. The spatial characteristics of ecological minimalism according to this are expressed as physical permanence, fluid connectivity, primitive reduction, and organic transference. The analysis results are as follows.First, physical permanence means that the space is perpetuated by accepting the background and flow of the given environment and achieving the balance through the cyclic relationship between nature and architecture, adapting the unique area to the social and cultural context and forming the permanence of the space by mediating human, nature and space.Second, fluid connection refers to the connection of the overall flow in space as an existence and architecture through the connection of various elements and values that the ecosystem is forming.Third, the primitive reduction means that the ecological environment and architecture are organically integrated by accepting the diversity that appears in the environment around the architecture and the diversity that appears as gradual growth, and that the reductiveness returns to the environment itself, excluding any internal correlation or meaning.Fourth, organic metastasis is to substitute infinite metastasis occurring in the system of ecological environment that is separated and combined with the passage of time as a space. In other words, it means that various factors inherent in nature and architecture are organically integrated to cause expansion of space. The integrated concept of ecology and minimalism mentioned in this study may not be enough to express the architectural space, but through this, the characteristics of ecological minimalism can present a new perspective in interpreting the space, and give value to remind modern architecture, natural environment, and the attitude that humans should interact with. Also, by analyzing the cases of SANAA architecture that have a close relationship with this, it is intended to cause a change in the architectural thinking of the modern society. This study has significance in that it suggests the possibility of space not simply changing along the flow of the times but mentally communicating with human life and natural environment and becoming an important foothold in the continuous coexistence through the mutual relationship between architectural space and nature.
