The purpose of this study is to examine the possibility of visual representation of ‘memory’ and ‘emotions’ in the rapidly developing and changing society and art environment today. Based on this, this paper also aims to explore methodically how my landscape paintings reflect the motifs of multi-layered memory. To achieve this goal, this paper has conducted three steps of analysis and research as follows. First, this study examines the theoretical aspect of the motifs of multi-layered memory, and looks into examples of the motif in modern painting. This study also explores the characteristics of landscape paintings that have the motif of memory and analyzes the ways of representation by artists such as Peter Doig(1959- ) of the West, Wu Guan Jhong(吴冠中, 1919-2010) of China, and Lee Daiwon(李大源, 1921-2005) of Korea. Lastly, this paper focuses on the methodological aspects of multi-layered memory to make a structural analysis of my paintings. This study has led to the following conclusions: First, drawing a landscape based on memory is an inner journey to find my own memories as an artist. Such a painting draws not only on visual experiences but also on multi-layered memories that are acquired in everyday life. In other words, my landscape paintings of memory contain the multi-faceted attributes of personal, ambiguous, and indefinite memories. Second, for visual representation of the motifs of multi-layered memory, I have attempted to collect and edit landscape images. As a method for this, I used photographs, books, videos, and multimedia. Using the inspirations as well as new mediums and techniques obtained in the process of editing and reconstituting memories, I was able to find out that various methods can be applied to representation. Traditional ways of making paintings are no longer novel. The production of paintings is diversified. Also, the characteristics of memory as a motif of an artwork are very multi-layered. Through this study, I was able to confirm that as a motif for drawing landscape paintings, memory has a multi-layered nature whose scope covers both consciousness and the unconscious (involuntary memory), reality and fantasy, atemporal nature of memory, cultural memory, nostalgia and longing; and the method, the media, and the language to represent them could also be very diverse. This informs us of the infinite possibilities of drawing a landscape. In other words, the landscape painting of memory is a field where an artist can demonstrate his/her creativity and imagination, and as such, it is none other than a reflective approach to the artist’s experiences.
