The purpose of this study was to search the essential meanings of the lived experiences of middle school students and mothers who have experienced migration to a new city. In South Korea, where a highly educationally motivated and achievement-oriented atmosphere are dominant, the migration and adaptation processes to a new city, which teenagers and parents have experienced, are not well studied. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to understand the overall experiences and their meanings on the movement and adaptation processes of the study participants. This not only will serve to understand them more deeply but also to draw some important implications for policy and practice. To accomplish this purpose, I chose the phenomenological method advocated by Husserl, specifically the hermeneutic(interpretive) phenomenological way of van Manen. The study participants were eight middle school students and eight mothers of middle school students who have experienced migration to Sejong city. The data-collecting period was approximately three months from mid-May to early August, 2018. I conducted face-to-face in-depth interviews with the 16 study participants. Through this, I collected a variety of honest and rich narratives on participants’ life history and experiences on their migration and adaptation processes. All of the interview data was transcribed and analyzed processes. The results are summarized as follows.First, the lived experiences of middle school students were drawn into 16 categories and five themes. The experiences on ‘time’ were, and . The interpreted meaning of these was . The experiences on ‘space’ were, and . The interpreted meaning was as well as . The experiences on ‘body’ were and . The interpreted meaning was . Finally, the experiences on ‘relationships’ regarding family were, , and . The interpreted meaning was . The experiences with other relationships were, and . The interpreted meaning was . An ambivalence of the experiences was found at the different levels of the framework. First, on ‘time’, it was . Second, on ‘space’, it was . Third, on ‘body’, it was . And lastly, on ‘relationships’, it was and . The essential theme of middle school students’ lived experiences in Sejong City was .Second, the lived experiences of mothers in Sejong city were drawn into 13 categories and six themes. Regarding ‘time’, the experiences were and . The interpreted meaning was . The experiences on ‘space’ were and . The interpreted meaning was . The experiences on ‘body’ were and . The interpreted meaning was . Lastly, in regards to ‘relationships’, the experiences with husband were . The interpreted meaning was . The experiences with others were the and . The interpreted meaning was . The experiences with child were, and . The interpreted meaning was . The ambivalence of the experience as interpreted through the previously described categories and themes is as follows: , at the time level; , at the space level; , at the body level; and, and , at the relationships level. It was concluded as as the essential lived experiences of mothers in Sejong city.Third, the meaning of common lived experiences of middle school students and mothers of Sejong city was analyzed. It was organized into six categories as follows:,, , and . The essential theme of the common lived experiences of middle school students and mothers was .The implication of this study based on the result is as follows.I conducted a qualitative research study on the living experiences of adolescents and parents who experienced migration to a new city. The study focused on various experiences and essential meanings in migration and adaptation processes of middle school students and mothers who are at a turning point in their lives. By selecting a phenomenological method, the living experiences of youth and parents of the new city was revealed ‘as it is'. By targeting parents and their children, I studied their experiences and interaction. This fostered a deeper understanding of youths and parents who have experiences migration. Also, by focusing on the place of a so-called new city, I presented the meaning of new city and its various impacts on their adaptation processes. This study is important because it extends the existing research body and provides a new understanding of youth and mothers who have experienced an involuntary migration to a new place to accompany their parents and transfer to another school.
