Despite an abundance of research correlating a firm’s network with its performance, very little is known about how exactly a firm’s network position attracts foreign investments. Using principles founded in social network and signaling theory, this study explored the role of interlocking board network position in a firm’s overseas ownership structure, specifically observing the effect of the interlocking board network position from two primary perspectives - central and brokerage position. Drawing on social network theory and a panel data set of 351 Taiwanese electronics firms, the study empirically measured the impact of both aforementioned positions on foreign ownership. The results indicated that while the central position experienced a U-shaped impact on its attractive potential, a firm’s brokerage position does not demonstrate significant influence on foreign ownership. The data also demonstrated how family ownership positively moderates the relationship between a firm’s central position and its foreign ownership. Conclusively, this research addresses the relationship between a firm’s interlocking board network with foreign capital structure as well as presents some negative attributes of networking strategy under various environments, thus contributing to relevant literature.
