The place people in today’s society like to visit for both amusement and relaxation is the theme park. Theme parks have been providing its visitors with various elements of attraction and entertainment through live-action films and animation contents. People visit theme parks with expectations of experiencing renewed attractions. Concurrently, theme parks have been playing a positive role as a place that provides visitors with different kinds of amusement, stress reduction, and reinvigoration of their daily lives through the use of such elements of charm. Theme park profits are proportional to the number of its visitors. In order to increase attraction, or the power to gather masses, the composition of attractions is most important. Such components of attraction provide a vital reason for designers to participate in the early stages of the theme park plans and to express ‘visually’ the intangible element of ‘theme’. Since attraction is determined by the level of customer satisfaction, designs for theme park attractions must be planned based on the contentment of visitors, thus, ‘how to ascertain visitors’ needs that must be gratified’ becomes the key concern. Attraction composition for the extension and revisitation of customers can be achieved via designing the content of the theme story in the form of a narrative, the use of new technology and its application in prompting visitors’ interest. Theme park is an area among the cultural content enterprise that applies the composition of the narrative structure and media contents most effectively. As the narrative characteristic of animation is related/connected to the core of the fun experience theme parks provide, fantastical media content such as animation is adopted by the entertainment venues. The animation narrative is the subject of study as animation has an extensive audience as well as being a preferred genre that transcends generations, and its plot and characters leave a strong impression in the memories of the audience. Animation has become one of the genres welcomed by all regardless of generation, race, and culture. For this very reason, under the proposition of animation as a narrative and a fantasy, many theme parks attempt to apply animation as their theme. Probing with interest into animation as a form of media that satisfies the imagination of the crowd at a universal level, makes for easy storytelling, and holds an independent industrial domain, is a meaningful undertaking as theme parks are visited by children all the way up to seniors with the exciting thrill of a break away. Likewise, a medium utilizing a new technology that enables the mass to experience the vivid expressions of the narrative is needed. This can be found in the virtual environment technology that maximizes the human desire and enhances satisfaction through the five senses. Today, virtual reality that pursues virtual space is being expanded to the notions of augmented reality and mixed reality. Technologies that pursue the virtual world such as these are taking center stage as areas of future growth that use illusion of the human body and mind from the five human senses up to the brainwaves and nerves to enable us to experience the projected virtual world. Hence, if theme park attraction as a form of entertainment that coincides with its purpose of escaping from reality, utilizes the animation narrative as its content and employs virtual environment technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality as a means of connecting with the audience, it could lead a way to produce the maximum effect as the attraction development content. The study began as an aspiration to help develop current theme park attraction as well as those of the future by designing animation narrative through storytelling, adopting it as story and character to the attraction, and applying virtual environment technologies to the attraction. The specific content and the progress of the study is as follows. In order to propose a theory that serves as the basis for the study, the concept and the structure of narrative as studied in semiotics have been generalized and depicted clearly, animation narrative and storytelling, one of the objects for this study, has been organized, and the attributes and distinctive features of theme parks as well as the concept and characteristics of attraction defined. In the fundamental theory that has been studied thus, ‘theme’ as motif for the theme park, the structure of narrative, and storytelling used in the theme park have been established by borrowing from the general concept of narrative, and the deliberate directing of contents that told a story of the spatial structure and theme stretching from the visitors’ circulation path has been examined and studied. The message relayed by the virtual environment technology that visitors actually come into contact with at an attraction and the current level of the technology used has been reviewed, and cases of how virtual environment technology is used in various fields as a content has been verified. In addition to this, the possibility of virtual environment technology being employed as the future media has been recorded. Cases of major domestic and international theme parks have been investigated regarding theme park attraction. The case has been confirmed regarding especially the part where distinctive features of the current attraction and the virtual environment have been applied. Narrative expression of attraction as a generalized process and design process by story planning when constructing a theme park have been examined, and differences and utility were deducted as existing attractions and virtual environment were applied to attraction. In the process of such research, it has been discovered that mainly 4D attractions are being operated in international as well as domestic theme parks, proving that attractions that have virtual environment technology applied are extremely rare. Even the few attractions that have employed such technology are limited to those in the form of a ride, with the gyro-drop in Lotte World as the attraction with the latest technology adopted. No other attraction, except for the rides, has adopted virtual environment technology. Therefore, based on the above research, this study has proposed a two-part development plan for theme park attractions with the virtual environment applied, one of narrative application and the other, virtual environment application appropriate for each theme. First, by introducing the construction process for a theme park, on what level attraction design is achieved has been explored. Then, drawbacks of animation narrative application and possible limitations of virtual environment technology application on theme park attraction have been analyzed. In order to propose a plan for attraction development, attraction design process has been suggested, not based on analysis and dramatization of the narrative content, but focusing on how to apply the storified narrative content to the attraction. Although an efficient process that could utilize narrative has been proposed for attraction design, regulation is difficult since in existing design processes designers from various fields work individually followed by corresponding materialization processes. This study proposed a design controller that modifies and regulates the various fields of design as a solution to the problems that occur in such design processes. Furthermore, through a three-step design development of pre-show, main-show, post-show, a multidimensional show has been proposed as a design plan to maximize audience immersion. In addition, a development model has been proposed in connection with the animation industry, which provides virtuous circulation for the theme park as an enterprise, in an attempt to stimulate animation and theme park content development henceforth. As for the virtual environment application proposal, a plan for utilization of the technology to existing attractions and a plan for its application to attractions to be built in the future have been made separately. Proposal for the application to existing attractions is an extension of 4D technology to the current attractions, with the domain where virtual environment technology application is possible separated. This is further classified into narrative attraction, arcade attraction, and contextual attraction, based on the categories made in the earlier research, and application plans have been made that works for each. The need for unique content development and virtual environment application suitable for attraction situations have also been stated.
