또한 환경 상태를 단계적으로 구분함에 따라 기존의 지수들(BMI, Average ecological score of benthic macroinvertebrate community: AESB, Total ecological score of benthic macroinvertebrate community: TESB)과 비교했을 때 적용성이 높았다.
The overall ecological integrity of stream has been deteriorated by humans. Many countries are seeking to recover the extent of ecological integrity of the stream ecosystem, ultimately restoring it. Although South Korea is also making efforts to evaluate the ecological integrity of its stream ecosystem, such efforts remain insufficient. In this study, we studied how to assess the integrity of the Korean stream ecosystem by using benthic macroinvertebrates. First, we evaluated whether sampling method of NAEMP (National Aquatic Ecology Monitoring Program) might be an appropriate method to evaluate ecological integrity of the stream ecosystem in South Korea. We found that the benthic macroinvertebrate sampling method (NAEMP method) was unsuitable for evaluating biological integrity of stream ecosystem in South Korea because it failed to reflect overall characteristics of stream. We predicted and analyzed the changing trends of benthic macroinvertebrate bioassessment factors by individual abundance (sample size), using the Weibull model. When the individual abundance (sample size) was small, the results of most bioassessment factors were largely fluctuated or distorted and showed no stable results. Small sample sizes are not enough to capture the overall characteristics of stream ecosystems, and the results can vary depending on the sample size, even at the same survey site; therefore, when evaluating biotic communities using biological assessment factors, the sample size should be carefully compared. Thus, large sample sizes are needed to obtain more reliable biological monitoring results. According to the results of this study, at least 1,000 individuals (7 replicates) will be needed to assess the overall characteristics of river ecosystems. If only-riffle sampling points were selected, they could not reflect the overall characteristics of the stream ecosystem, confirmed that the results of some biological evaluation factors (especially EPT) were distorted. Therefore, various microhabitats should be selected as sampling points to suit the characteristics of the stream so as not to be biased when selecting microhabitats. Combining the results of this study, we proposed a sampling method of benthic macroinvertebrate for assessment of stream ecosystem integrity. These results can be used as basic information for establishing a more accurate and reasonable biological monitoring method of the stream ecosystem in the future. Also, we wanted to develop a Korean Benthic Macroinvertebrate Multimetric Index (K-BMMI) for assessment of stream ecosystem integrity. K-BMMI was developed based on the reference condition approach method and Box plot. Reference streams corresponding to the characteristics of each Korean stream type were selected by reviewing domestic and foreign research cases. The final total number of reference streams selected in this study was 128 (TypeⅠ; 24, TypeⅡ; 72, TypeⅢ; 17, TypeⅣ; 6, TypeⅤ; 9). The reference stream is considered to have been selected appropriately, as the characteristics of environmental factors and biological factors of the selected reference and impaired stream are clearly distinct. Five of the most influential core metric elements were selected for each stream type among the initial 28 candidate metric elements through box plots and statistical analysis. The result value or ratio of core metric elements for each stream type was quantified by a continuous scoring system with a score of 0 to 10, and finally K-BMMI was proposed. The K-BMMI developed in this study clearly distinguished reference and impaired stream, and showed significant correlation with various environmental factors. K-BMMI was also highly applicable compared to the existing indices benthic macroinvertebrates index (BMI), average ecological score of benthic macroinvertebrate community (AESB) and total ecological score of benthic macroinvertebrate community (TESB). The environmental factors and biological characteristics of the reference stream each stream type can be used as basic data for the future assessment of stream ecosystem integrity. These data could also be used to interpret changes in the environmental and biological characteristics of streams due to disturbance. However, its applicability of K-BMMI has not been confirmed yet. Some stream types may have statistical errors because of their very limited number of samples. Therefore, it needs to be supplemented by ongoing research and data accumulation in the future.
