The majority of ESL/EFL teachers in the world are nonnative speakers (NNSs) of English. In the Press Conference 2016 hosted by Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, spokesperson reported that up to 2015, the population of high school full-time teacher amounts to 2.54 million, including those working in Secondary Occupational Schools. However, insufficient attention has been given to the working conditions and factors that challenge their success and sense of professional satisfaction, in particular their intercultural competence, attitude and professional motivation, oriented from their command of English as a foreign language. CETs’ English proficiency is usually taken for granted that they are generally competent enough, linguistically, interculturally and pedagogically, to carry out classroom teaching in an EFL context as that in China. This research project thus attempts to explore the patterns of China high school English teachers’ self-perceptions of their intercultural competence, attitude towards English use, motivation of English teaching, and proficiency-oriented correlation among these variables in EFL context. The data were collected through an on-line questionnaire and semi-structured interview, adopting an explanatory mixed method. The goal of the quantitative phase of the study is to obtain an overall picture of high school CETs’ self-perceptions of the variables through a 66-item questionnaire. 101 participants submitted their questionnaire responses. The goal of the qualitative phase of the study is to explain more deeply the reasons that results the CETs’ typical assessments and perceptions of their intercultural competence, attitudes towards English use and motivation of English teaching through individual interviews with five purposefully selected participants from the same population. The quantitative findings demonstrate that teachers are not only dissatisfied with teacher preparation programs in terms of productive skills, but also have complaints about in-service training programs. They are theoretically competent in IC attitude and awareness, rather than IC skills and knowledge. They have a favorable attitude towards native-speakerism and English use, but their off-class engagement with English is at a surprisingly low level. Statistics shows that teachers have a positive motivation of English teaching. In addition, three groups of correlation are found. The first is between teachers’ IC and their academic degree. The second is between English proficiency and teachers’ off-class engagement with English, motivation of teaching. The third is between teachers’ IC and English proficiency, attitude towards English use, off-class engagement, motivation of teaching English.Teachers recognize the contribution of English education to their IC; nevertheless, qualitative findings confirm the need to acknowledge the individual difficulties when expressing themselves in EFL in both language and culture. Teacher training programs should incorporate linguistic and intercultural improvement components. Teachers should enlarge the scope and depth of off-class learning activities to regularly get involved with English input and contextualize linguistic forms in real communication. The encouragement of CLT, coupled with the importance of CEE, makes CETs’ situation more complex. Accordingly, implications for teacher education and policy-making in the area are drawn. This paper hopes to make CETs aware of their situations through conscious self-perceptions and raise their attention to EFL proficiency retention. Consequently, light would be shed to future design of teacher training programs by providing a first-hand understanding of their theoretical and practical conceptualization of intercultural competence, self-perceptions of attitude towards English use and motivation of teaching,.Key words: attitude towards English use, Chinese English Teacher (CET), EFL context, high school, intercultural competence (IC), motivation of teaching English, self-perception
