The core purposes of investigative interviews during a criminal investigation are information gathering and deception detection. In order to study the use of written statements in investigative interviews, this study empirically verified the effects of different methods of writing statements on information gathering and deception detection. In Study 1, a questionnaire survey was conducted to examine investigators’ usage andperception of written statements. A total of 230 investigators were surveyed regarding the procedure and method of receiving statements in criminal cases. Results indicated that the procedures and methods for receiving statements varied and were not systemized. Furthermore, most investigators were revealed to limit the use of written statements within the formal and procedural scopes. On the other hand, a problem wasobserved in the current method of writing statements.Study 2 was an experimental study that examined the effects of the length of a statement and the writer’s veracity on the amount and type of information in thestatement. Statements were to be written without a limitation on length (free length condition), or with a requirement of a minimum of one page (one-page length condition). For veracity, subjects were asked to write what they have actually experienced (true condition), or to include both what they have and have not experienced (false condition). The 91 university students who participated were randomly assigned to the fourexperimental conditions. Results showed that the amount of information written increased for all information types in the one-page length condition as compared to that in the free length condition. When making statements about situations that they had not experienced in the one-page length condition, less information was given for the false condition as compared to the true condition, and detailed information could not bepresented. Study 3 was an experimental study that verified whether there is a difference in the total amount of information and the amount of information by information type depending on statement writing instructions and veracity. In terms of the type of statement writing instructions, the participants were asked to “write in detail everything you remember” (standard instruction condition), and to write a statement after presenting a sample statement and a list of expected questions by the investigator (strategic instruction condition). Participants were asked to write statements solely based on personal experience (true condition), or falsely in a manner contradicting personal experience (false condition). The 86 university students who participated were randomly assigned to the four experimental conditions. Results indicated that the true condition yielded a higher amount of information as compared to the false condition. Contrary to the standard instruction condition, the strategic instruction condition produced more case-related information in the true condition as compared to that in the false condition. Conversely, for the non-case related information, the false condition produced more information than the true condition did. Study 4 investigated the effect of examining the concreteness of a statement on deception detection accuracy. The 64 university students who participated were asked to evaluate the credibility of the statements acquired from Study 3. The participants in the experimental group were provided with prior knowledge on the concreteness of thestatements, and they were asked to evaluate the credibility of the statements after evaluating their concreteness. On the other hand, the control group evaluated the credibility of the statements without any other instructions. Results indicated that the group that examined the concreteness of statements (the experimental group) had higher lie detection accuracy as compared to the control group. The significant effect on examining concreteness of written statements was only found in the strategy instruction group. The significance of each study result was examined and a practical method of using statements was proposed in the comprehensive discussion. Additionally, the limitations of this study were explored and suggestions for further research were provided. key-words: investigative interviewing, written statements, interview strategies, information gathering, deception detection, statement analysis
