The present study aims to compare and analyse the patterns of refusal speech act of Korean and Chinese graduate students living in Korea under request situations in college and to identify the patterns of refusal speech act of Chinese graduate students living in Korea. The authors first examined the previous research related to the speech act, referred to the strategies presented in studies conducted by Kim Yoo Hyang (2008), Kim Jeong-eun (2011), and Kang Hyo Jeong (2015), focusing on the strategy framework of refusal speech act presented by Beebe, Takahashi & Uliss-Weltz (1990), Lyuh (1992), and Lee Hae Young (2003), and divided the refusal speech act strategy into direct, indirect, and adjunct categories to devise the strategy framework of the refusal speech act. The authors administered a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) to collect data from Korean and Chinese graduate students in their 20s, who are currently living and attending school in Korea. To analyse the overall patterns of refusal speech act of the Chinese student group, the authors compared and analysed the usage frequency of the refusal strategy as well as the usage patterns of the strategy combination and detailed strategy combination of both the student groups. Furthermore, the authors examined the changes that occur according to the period of residence in Korea by comparing the analysing the refusal strategy patterns for each residence period. Finally, the authors examined the patterns of strategy combination usage, refusal burden, and psychological state after refusal for every request situation in college. The results of this study are as follows. First, the Chinese graduate student group living in Korea used indirect refusal strategy more than other strategy types, and most preferred to use ‘indirect (+indirect)' strategy combination. Second, according to the period of residence in Korea, the use of ‘direct + adjunct' and ‘direct + indirect' strategy combinations underwent a curvilinear change; consequently, there were considerable differences in the usage patterns of the Korean graduate student group. Third, the Chinese graduate student group preferred avoidance strategies, such as ‘postponement' and ‘acceptance delay', and excessively used ‘title'. Fourth, the Chinese graduate student group felt less burden and discomfort in terms of the professor's refusal, compared to the Korean graduate student group.According to the above results, the Chinese graduate student group had a high level of Korean pragma-linguistic ability; however, it lacked the Korean socio-pragmatic ability. Nevertheless, these students are investing considerable efforts in adapting to the Korean culture, judging by their behaviour of not freely expressing their internal intentions, carefully practicing courtesy, and performing the refusal speech act.The present study focused on analysing the patterns of refusal speech act realisation of Chinese graduate students, who have a relatively high Korean pragmatic ability than other learner groups, under request situations in college. This study is significant as it examines not only pragma-linguistic ability but also socio-pragmatic ability. However, it has the following limitations: first, the number of participating students and colleges were limited; and second, although the authors attempted to present objective research data using various procedures, it does not sufficiently reflect the actual language of students.
