This thesis is a study of my own works between 2015 and 2017 on the humanity in the phenomenon of the figure’s partial division. Humanity refers to the human nature and inner character, and here I pay attention to primal desires in the nature of human being. The primitive desire is subjective and relative to the criteria and degree, the examples are such as worldly desire, appetite, libido. This can be considered in connection with instinct as reflexive innate behaviors regardless of reason. When instinctive desires are not fulfilled, humans reveal tension. Human beings are differentiated from animals by controlling their instincts, but at times the tension state appears to be animal and evil: depressive and self-destructive disposition. Infants or people with schizophrenia easily show this tendency. Their immediate reactions to dissatisfaction are often expressed in extreme manners, such as a distorted look, an infuriated yell, or self-harm. I regarded such phenomenon as a manifestation of the 'inherent nature of man', and interpret this nature as an 'element' of humanity. From the Western religious viewpoint, human nature has begun from deep-rooted 'radical evil'. Humans have taught and learned that they can only be forgiven by God when turning away from the evil inherent in themselves. In Eastern philosophy, the “Good Human Nature Principle” of Mencius (BC 372 ~ BC 289) and “Bad Human Nature Principle” of Xunzi (BC 298 ~ BC 238) treat inquiries concerning human beings. I thought that it was my inevitable destiny as a person who cannot avoid radical evil on the basis of the view of Western religion and the philosophy of Xunzi. The phrase “Human beings are evil from the moment they are born”, as Xunzi said, means that humans are born with evil traits and do evil. Eliminate radical evil can be thought differently as turning the meaning of existence into anti-act. These thoughts appear in the image of the person in a differentiated form by dismantling the human image in my work. Chapter 2 covers the techniques of dividing characters under the keywords such as 'cutting', 'distortion', 'division', 'fragmentation', and 'combination'. This expression applies directly to the body. First of all, I dealt with how to combine people and space using photographs and charcoal, as a precedent for technique research of my work. This represents the expression of deletion and truncation through the abnormal distortion of characters and spaces. Later, the study on the expression of 'person and space' and 'person and animal' explains the expression of distortion and division. Lastly, the images divided earlier are expressed in a single combined form with a ‘mosaic type’ image expression. The main materials of the work are charcoal and recycles canvas, it is grafted on the technique utilizing the remaining traces. The point is to express the image of the one’s own human nature felt by herself excluding the unique image of the person. The authors and artists, to whom I mainly referred, are Walter Benjamin(1892∼1940), Chang-seop Son(1992∼2010) content-wise, and William Kentridge(1995∼) Jake and Dinos Chapman(1966∼, 1962∼), Paul Klee(1879∼1940) technique-wise. The humanity expressed in this paper started from the question about radical evil. Radical evil was illustrated as a component that constitutes the humanity, but we cannot affirm whether it is positive or negative. We merely recognize it as an undeniable act of providence. I would like to sublimate these subjective views to a unique world view of oeuvres. Also, through this thesis, I would like to pave the way for opportunities for multilateral consideration and contemplation on how I could establish the logic of works that can be vague in the future as an artist.
