The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the problems caused by Xunzi's theory of human nature and to reinterpret the moral cultivation in order to reveal Xunzi's theory of human being. In particular, it reveals the role of the will in how to keep the moral level stable, with the attention to diversity and variability at the human level. The background of the Xunzi's human view can be divided into the period and the ideological background. The brutal background has shaped the pessimism of the human, but shows that he has worked hard in politics and education, which is why he is optimistic about humans. These expectations of human beings are connected by his view of heaven and man to the belief that the fate of man and society depends on man, not on heaven. This awareness of human responsibility is the basis of the theory of human being. As claimed by Xunzi, Humans have diversity and changeability in morals. Diversity is a different level of separation from humans, and variability refers to the possibility of moral development and moral failure. First, the classification process is based on whether people entered the moral world with regard to the distinctions of moral levels, and then humans entering the moral world were divided into scholar, gentleman, sage and sage-king. It is important to stress that the standards of morality are not just a matter of quantity of intelligence, but of practice. In addition, focusing on the changeability of moral levels clearly indicates that a person with a low moral level can not only go to a higher level, but also that a higher standard of human beings can fall to a lower level. That is, it is the variability of moral levels to include both aspects of moral development and aspects of moral failure. In response, I first begin by arguing that the analogy to wood is to develop the moral standard of man, and that the possibilities of such moral development are the qualities (質 and 具) of man. In addition, concerning aspects of moral failure, Xunzi describes the patterns of the confucian, dividing them by the levels of their morality within the confucian communities. I assert that the cause of moral failure is moral instability that goes from Xing(性) to the Wei(偽). Such moral instability is caused by the highly complex process: Xing(性)–Qing(情)–Lv(慮)–Wei(偽). In particular, the process from Lv to Wei need the power of human will. The word will means “the state of mind in which you want to achieve something.” Xunzi tends to emphasize the will. In matters of practice the will has its own place in which what is known is connected with the deed.
