Fashion design is an area of artistry, expressiveness and practicality. On the basis of self-expressions with personal values, people’s concern for fashion design and awareness of aesthetics have been significantly enhanced, thus requiring designers to research into the artistry and expressiveness of apparel all the more. Continually providing new enlightenment and inspiration for fashion design, painting has already been integrated into fashion design and serves as a favourable expression technique for an increasing number of designers. Among many schools of painting, Fauvism is well-known for its pure colour, simple and vivid form as well as strong visual impact. Fauvism began in France in the early 20th century and boasts a representative personage called Henri Matisse, whose work features childlike innocence and vigorous vitality as passionate and free as wild beasts. By analysing his paintings and their characteristics and with the aim of developing the artistic expressiveness of fashion design, this thesis takes Matisse, who led the revolution of painting in the 20th century and liberated colour from objects, as the research object, applies his painting work to practical fashion design, and makes finished products accordingly, thus proposing a specific example of the application of painting inspiration in fashion design. To this end, I first consulted Matisse’s artistic career and work, and through the research into the features of his paintings in different periods, I analysed and concluded his painting characteristics from several aspects, which are the subjective expression and sharp contrast in terms of colour as well as the decorativeness, the simplicity, the planarity and the changeability in terms of lines and forms. Then, by searching fashion magazines, online materials, videos, related data, etc., I collected a number of fashion design cases that had taken advantage of Matisse’s painting work. Finally, by referring to and sorting out all the materials I collected and taking Matisse’s painting work as design inspiration, I applied the colour and figures in his work to the designs of a total of 13 sets of garments, 4 of which were made into finished products, including a tight-fitting dress, a H-type coat, a long dress and a sleeveless top and a suit consisting of a pair of high-waisted trousers and a top. Through the production of these garments, this thesis has drawn the following conclusions: First, The patterns in Matisse’s paintings have a strong flat decorativeness. Applying the planarized decorative patterns to fashion design and presenting them with three-dimensional expression techniques not only retain the decorativeness of the patterns themselves but also enhance the artistic beauty and attractiveness of apparel. Second, The patterns in the paintings of Matisse are applied to the details of the garments by changing their colours and shapes through rearranging and recombination so as to keep the independence of the patterns. The patterns are irregularly and incompletely placed on the garments whose own outlines and boundaries have already been broken through, therefore stressing the sense of layers and fluidity. Thirdly, The colour in Matisse’s paintings features a strong subjective sense. With the decorative effect of felt, the maximum restoration of the primary colours of high saturation, and the recombination and matching of colours, a pure, beautiful and pleasant visual experience will be presented. Fourthly, The complementary colours to those in Matisse’s work are boldly applied to the garments, breaking restrictions of red and green when they are used in clothing and creating a strong but harmonious and united visual impact. Lastly, The arcs in the paintings by Matisse are presented by the garments in a three-dimensional way. The application of arcs has changed the basic outline of the garments, and the integration of straight lines and curves gives apparel an interesting and balanced visual effect. With the application of painting and taking it as the inspiration and theme of fashion design, this thesis explores the possibilities of fashion design, looks for a new aesthetic consciousness and pursues the expression of decoration. Hopefully, this research will benefit the studies of combining painting and apparel made by scholars in the future. It is hoped that more related research into the diverse expressions and decorative beauty of fashion design will be conducted in combination of painting.
