The use of abbreviations stems from the economy of language. In particular, various languages currently used in different countries generate a significant amount of abbreviations, and accordingly, academic interest in abbreviations has become increasingly evident in linguistics. In Korea, more and more abbreviations have emerged, and the use of such terminologies is prevalent in an array of fields ranging from public broadcasting to its use among the younger generations on the Internet and in text messages. In the case of Korean abbreviations, the abbreviated form varies significantly, such that even Koreans may experience difficulty communicating due to generational divides. In particular, abbreviations are more commonly used by the younger generation compared to the older generation. As expected, such abbreviations are difficult to comprehend from the prospective of a foreigner learning the language. Furthermore, abbreviations are rarely examined in a classroom setting and are not included in textbooks, thereby becoming a major obstacle for foreign language learners to communicate on a practical basis. In view of this, the significance of this study is in examining various educational methods regarding abbreviations for expanding the Korean vocabulary of Chinese learners. The overall outline of this paper is as follows. Section 1 introduces the necessity and purpose of the study, the study subjects and methods, as well as a review of previous studies related to the subject matter. In Section 2, based on a theoretical basis, the paper provides the definitions and categories of abbreviations with reference to previous studies and publications, and presents general concepts and characteristics of abbreviations in relation to Korean and Chinese.Section 3 examines the composition and characteristics of Korean and Chinese abbreviations. Based on a list of 500 Chinese and Korean abbreviations collected during the course of this study, this section categorizes and presents the characteristics of Korean and Chinese abbreviations in accordance with the abbreviated configurations of the source language, the method of constructing abbreviations, and the meanings of abbreviations.Section 4 presents the core part of this study - a proposal of teaching methods of abbreviations for vocabulary enhancement. In this section, the paper discusses the necessity and current practice of teaching Korean abbreviations in an academic setting, in addition to discussing the contents and methods of Korean abbreviation education. Then, the following three methods are suggested as methods for educating Korean abbreviations to Chinese learners of the Korean language: 1) teaching abbreviations utilizing media, 2) teaching abbreviations utilizing a comparison between Korea and China, and 3) a method of teaching abbreviations using text messages. Lastly, Section 5 summarizes and concludes the discussions presented in the study. keyword: Korean Language Education, Chinese Learner, Abbreviation, Configuration Methods, Characteristics, Education Plan
