The global spread of Chinese culture due to the effort of pluralization by the fashion to embrace various cultures around the world and the national growth of China is leading to a frequent appearance of Chinese elements of designs in today's catwalks. This study aims at analysing the Chinese-style designs in contemporary fashion collections, based on consideration of traditional Chinese clothes and accessories, in order to define its characteristics. Also, the characteristics of Chinese-style design in the top 4 fashion collections will be studied through case analysis, along with the similarities and differences between Chinese and non-Chinese designers in their use of Chinese elements in their design. The meaning of such studies lies in predicting how contemporary Chinese-style designs will develop in the near future, and provide basic information for designers who are trying to incorporate Chinese elements in their designs. The research method of this study is as follows. A theoretical research and a study of the theoretical background will be made based on books and publications about fashion collections, analysis of existing research, documents and internet material regarding traditional Chinese dress codes; then the characteristics of Chinese-style designs will be drawn from such a study along with case analysis of the top 4 fashion collections around the world, from 3 aspects, which are Silhouette, Detail and Pattern. The range of this study is limited to Chinese-style designs found in top 4 fashion collections, which is Paris, Milano, London and New York, for 10 seasons during the last 5 years (from 2013 S/S collection to 2017 F/W collection). It is developed on 642 photos of Chinese-style designs found on the Korean and Chinese web sites of fashion magazines, such as http://www.vogue.co.kr/ and http://www.yoka.com. The conclusion of this study is as follows. Firstly, in the quatitive analysis of Chinese-style designs found throughout the 10 seasons for 5 years between 2013 S/S collection and 2017 F/W collection, it was noticable that every year had a Chinese element to it. Especially, more cases were observed in 2017 than any other period during the research; and more Chinese-style elements were found in F/W seasons than S/S seasons. Results show that by collection, Milano had the most Chinese design elements; cases found in Milano and Paris showed similarities of elegant atmosphere and luxurious quality, despite the difference in quantity. On the other hand, the London and New York collections were more focused on emphasizing their own features; in the London collection, for instance, Chinese elements were found in young and fresh attempts made by new designers; in the New York collection, the emphasis was laid on keeping up with the pace of contemporary developments in society, a more practical approach. In other words, out of the top 4 fashion collections, the Milano and Paris collections were using the Chinese-style design elements more actively. Also, in this research, Chinsese-style designs were found most often in Shiatzy Chen, a brand made by a Chinese designer; and in the total number of Chinese-style designs, a larger number of non-Chinese designers were found than designers of Chinese heritage.Secondly, the most used 'silhouette' of Chinese-style designs in contemporary fashion collections are the H silhouette; and shape elements from traditional Chinese dress codes, such as Oh, Posam and Magwae were used in the designs. Also, it was observed that all top 4 fashion collections not only made use of H, A, O silhouettes (the basic form of Chinese-style design), but also X and Y silhouettes applied to contemporary fashion, in order to emphasize comfort, and express feminine grace / beauty of curves.Thirdly, in 'detail', all top 4 fashion collections had made use of the 'collar' in Chinese-style design; and all other top fashion collections except for the London collection made most use of 'Imnyeong' for its 'collar'. For the closing, the use of 'Bipageum' and 'Daegeum' made up the majority. In Paris and Milano collections, when these elements were used, they had a tendency to decorate by taking the form of a button knot; in the London collections, they tended to emphasize simpler lines and contemporary expression more. All top 4 collections made less use of Chinese-style sleeves, and where they were used they mostly 'Daesoo' was used. In conclusion, Paris and Milano collections focused on more traditional Chinese elements in their 'detail', when London and New York emphasized designs of a more modern feel.Fourthly, taken from the use of Chinese-style design elements in the patterns of top 4 fashion collections, it was found that the plant patterns were used most often, and geometric patterns least. For animal patterns, all 4 collections used dragons, butterflies and birds; especially, the dragon being a significant symbol of Chinese traditional culture, it was often used in all 4 collections. In plant patterns, all 4 collections used peony, apricot flower and lotus flowers took as the majority. In some collections, designers expressed luxury through plant patterns on silk fabric. Geometric patterns were less used, and other patterns included traditional Chinese elements (usually not used for fashion design) such as Chinese calligraphy, ink-and-wash painting, ancient architecture, chinaware with cobalt blue drawings, characters from literature, etc.. Fifth, certain differences and similarities were found between the Chinese designers and non-Chinese designers regarding their understanding of Chinese-style design. Chinese designers tended to emphasize more specifically the traditional Chinese elements, and promote Chinese traditional culture; non-Chinese designers had a more simplistic understanding of Chinese-style design, and aimed for simpler, more contemporary designs, making use of the elements in order to express originality in their designs. Similarities were found between Chinese and non-Chinese designers as well, that contemporary fashion designs no longer just imitate the traditional Chinese dress code, but integrate Chinese traditional elements with contemporary fashion in order to create new kind of Chinese-style design.Sixth, the trend of Chinese-style design in the top 4 fashion collections for the past 5 years was to emphasize the characteristic features of Chinese traditional dress code. Decorating techniques and design elements from contemporary day fashion were integrated with the distinct Chinese elements in order to fit the contemporary fashion sense. Through the results of this research, it was easy to see that Chinese-style design in contemporary fashion collections were more than imitations of traditional Chinese clothing - designers were integrating contemporary fashion design elements with traditional Chinese elements in order to express the grace and glamour of Chinese-style design. Contemporary designers do much more than putting Chinese elements in their design; they make full use of the industry's pluralization, and combine new styles such as Ethnic looks and Asian looks. Therefore, for the future of Chinese-style design, certain efforts to fit the public's taste as well as to make use of cutting edge technology would be necessary.Lastly, it is my wish that this research provides useful information to fashion designers who would like to take traditional Chinese elements into their design, or basic material to researchers in relevant areas, and that Chinese-style design can develop in various directions so that new Chinese styles would be found.
