The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) onboard the Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) is the first multi-channel ocean color imager in geostationary orbit, thus hourly GOCI top-of-atmosphere radiance has been available for the retrieval of aerosol optical properties over East Asia since March 2011. This study presents the improvement of aerosol optical properties (AOPs) retrieval algorithm using the visible and near-Infrared channels of GOCI, named as the GOCI Yonsei Aerosol Retrieval (YAER) algorithm. The AOPs retrieved from the GOCI YAER Version 1 (V1) algorithm are aerosol optical depth (AOD), fine-mode fraction (FMF), single scattering albedo (SSA), Ångström Exponent (AE), and aerosol type. The aerosol models were created based on a global analysis of the Aerosol Robotic Networks (AERONET) inversion data, and covered broad range of size distribution and absorptivity including nonspherical properties. The surface reflectance was constructed differently for ocean and land: The Cox-Munk ocean bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) model was used over ocean, and improved minimum reflectance technique was used over land. Also, pixels of turbid water were detected using spectral characteristics over which aerosol properties were also retrieved. The aerosol products were evaluated against AERONET observations and MODIS Collection 6 aerosol products during the DRAGON-NE Asia 2012 campaign. Comparison of AOD from GOCI and AERONET results in a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.885 and a linear regression equation with GOCI AOD = 1.086 × AERONET AOD – 0.041, which is comparable with MODIS DT/DB AOD. The GOCI YAER AE, FMF, and SSA show lower correlation than AOD, but still shows some skills for qualitative use. The second version of GOCI YAER algorithm (version 2, or V2) includes the improvement of cloud masking, surface reflectance determination, the channel selection for better accuracy and near-real-time (NRT) processing. Several cloud masking methods found in recent studies were added to minimize cloud contamination in the aerosol products, and the surface reflectance climatology was improved using multi-year samples to increase the possibility of finding clear pixels. The GOCI YAER V2 products were evaluated together using AERONET, Sun-Sky Radiometer Observation Network (SONET), and MODIS during March 2011 to February 2016. The ratio within MODIS expected error of GOCI YAER V2 land AOD increased from 49% to 60%, and the counterpart of ocean AOD also increased from 62% to 71% compared to the V1. Various errors were analyzed and the diagnostic and prognostic pixel level uncertainties were calculated. High AOD area and period were analyzed as 6-km high spatial resolution in climatological scale. Also, the relation of diurnal variation between GOCI AOD and particulate matter (PM) was analyzed as aspect of air quality. With the improved products, the surface PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations were estimated statistically from the GOCI AOPs and meteorological data. The estimated PM2.5 shows high correlation of 0.84 with measured PM2.5. The enhancement of GOCI YAER algorithm enables the accurate monitoring of transboundary and local aerosols in NRT. It also enables the accurate air-quality forecasting through the data assimilation with chemical transport models in short time.
