In the past, I painted rather realistically scenery of visible nature which gave me rest and comfort. The reason for that might be I could escape from desolate modern society, industrialized and urbanized, when I put peaceful nature on the canvas. Recently I included human beings in my paintings. Considering that human beings can be regarded as part of nature, nature without human beings may not be perfect. When humans appeared in my paintings, the relationship between nature and humans became an important challenge. Humans and nature can become one, or confront each other, or harmonize. As I began to paint both humans and nature, I noticed that they were not eternal, but would disappear some day. Thus I started to pay attention to creation and extinction of humans and nature. Furthermore, creation leads to extinction with the passage of time and in some cases these can coexist at the present time and place. I concluded that these phenomena or concepts could be better expressed by intuitive lyrical abstraction, rather than figurative painting, and named my works . This thesis is aimed at analyzing the step-by-step background of my works turning from figurative painting to abstraction, and investigating what were contents of my works and how formative elements such as colors, composition, curves, etc. were interacting. The contents of my works were three-fold. First was relationship between humans and nature. It could be primal harmony, or weak humans before gigantic nature, or conflicts. Second was concept or phenomenon of creation and extinction itself. The past creation and future extinction are concealed in the current visible objects. Third was hope for eternity. In order to express conceptual contents by abstraction, I utilized colors, curves, layering, leaf stamping and so on. Main colors were green and blue. Green symbolized nature of life, and blue, nature of non-life. Reds were also used in some exceptional cases. Layering was used to materialize repetition of creation and extinction with the passage of time. Outwardly, series were expressing relationship between humans and nature, and concept of creation and extinction, but inwardly, my ultimate spiritual hope for eternity where there is no creation and extinction any longer.
