In 20c, China achieved tremendous economic growth and on the occasion of 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, APEC Summit Conference in 2014, it drew unusual attention from all over the world. Therefore, owing to concentrated concern over Chinese history and culture, costumes utilizing traditional elements of China has been represented in diversified ways. The objective of this study is to clarify inherent formative beauty of costumes being represented in the latest collection by analyzing how Chinese traditional elements were utilized in it.Significance of this study is to understand aesthetic consciousness (sense) of Chinese tradition and expand a new horizon in fashion research of Chinese costumes by analyzing a formative expression and beauty of Chinese style fashion design being represented in Beijing collection after examining term definition and characteristics for Chinese style costumes through diversified specialized books. Formative characteristics of Chinese style fashion being represented in Beijing collection from the period from 2010 to 2015 were classified into each utilization of traditional costumes form, Obangsaek (colors symbolizing five orientations), Chinese style pattern and natural fabric. Straight line being frequently utilized in Beijing collection for the recent past 6 years was similar to silhouette of female costumes during Qing era, the last Chinese empire. In particular, qipao of Qing Machu as well as Jangsam that is one-piece form of Hanzu fully shows an image of straight line. Traditional costume form having straight line convenient for daily life was utilized for costumes of modern women being engaged in active social life. Obangsaek having very strong symbolism in Chinese thought is blue, white, black, red and yellow colors. Obangsaek having been most frequently used in fashion for the recent past 6 years was blue color and red color representing China has been usually used in a combined form with other colors rather than it being represented in overall costumes owing to its strong symbolism. Diversified Chinese style patterns were classified into plant pattern, geometric pattern, animal pattern, personnage pattern and Chinese character. Peony blossom that is national flower of China was most frequently utilized among plant patterns and it was expressed in costumes by utilizing embroidery, fabric weaving, printing, cutting in a plane form. For Chinese style costumes represented in collection, natural fabric such as silk, wool, cotton, hemp was frequently used and most frequently used fabric was silk material. Silk material that has been developed continuously for 5000 years of cultural history is a typical Chinese material and it could be confirmed that such material has been utilized as its traditional element as well as costume pattern. Formative characteristics of Chinese style fashion design being deduced through this study could be summarized as traditional, natural, refined and sensual beauty. Traditional beauty of China having diversified characteristics of vast land, profound historical, cultural background and custom was most frequently used aesthetic element among modern Chinese style fashion design. It was based on beauty being expressed through traditional elements that was passed down from the ancient times under the harmony of traditional historical features and culture. According to WeWei thought of Chinese Taoism, it is said that adaptation to natural change and not trying to develop something artificial are natural aesthetic sense. In collection, form, color, texture expressions of natural living organism were shown naturally without artificial touch and natural aesthetic sense was expressed by using not exaggerated color. Together with symbolism of expressing purity and elegance, refinement having harmonious aesthetic sense looking just like beauty was expressed as inherent dignified quality and cultural, artistic realm. Fantasy as a part of artistic creation is a creative skill of making art by imagining form of reality as one desired to do without satisfying with its imitation and mimicry. Fantastic beauty of an artistic aesthetic sense that exaggerates and distorts real life through fantasy even though being originated from real life was actively expressed as beauty full of colors and aesthetic sense of designers representing their self emotion and hope was expressed as fantastic beauty. Sensual beauty being most frequently represented in female fashion is an aesthetic sense having sensual attraction being expressed through body figure, clothing style, appearance, attitude and talking style. See-through look that exposes female breast glimmeringly induced association process and beauty of human body could be felt by unique feminine attraction and feeling together with sexual aesthetic sense after wearing costumes having inherent sensual beauty through personalized temperament and attraction. Therefore, in order to keep pace with global fashion trend through Beijing collection,"Chinese style" costumes included two-piece style separating top and pants and one-piece that connects top with pants in modern costumes and traditional Obangsaek was used together as well. In addition, peony, dragon, phoenix pattern and Chinese character that are typical form in traditional patterns as well as natural material passed down from old time ago were used frequently. And it seems that while using handicraft that could be expressed by material weaving, embroidery, dying methods, western elements were also used together. It is expected that this study would become an indicator suggesting a direction for Chinese fashion designers preferring Chinese style fashion design and a reference data for the designers who are willing to advance into Chinese industry. When observing Chinese style of Beijing collection, it could be seen that while maintaining traditional culture, it is developed together with modern fashion. Chinese elements have been settled down as an important means and method for expressing individualized beauty in modern fashion design. It seems that succession and innovation of Chinese traditional culture are promoted by Chinese elements and those elements are getting closer to global fashion stage.
