The advance in scientific technology has fueled the changes of mediaenvironments, and massmedia-aided marketing is being replaced withnetworking-based social media marketing. This shift is even concurrent withanother change in modern people's lifestyle, and producers and consumers areable to share contents and keep track of how things are received in real timewithout being restricted by time ad space. Indeed, there is a paradigm shift thateverybody is able to produce and consume contents and share them with others.Such a paradigm shift exerts a huge influence on the music industry as well. It's possible to listen to music anywhere and at any time on music websitesincluding Melon, Soribada or iTunes that distribute intangible sound sources, whereas there had just been a limited number of vehicles by which one couldlisten to music in the past, such as tangible CDs or tapes. And how peoplerespond can be found in real time via social media like Facebook, Twitter orYoutube. Everybody can listen to a Korean singer's music or an American singer's music anywhere in our country or foreign countries and watch theirmusic videos. The Korean wave initially started in Asia including China orJapan in the 1990s, and it's now possible to listen to the music of Koreansingers in different countries in the world involving some European countries,South America and the Middle East, which contributes to the spread of theKorean wave. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to examine the transition of theoverseas marketing strategies of Korean popular music agencies by time periodand by country. As for marketing strategies by time period, performances through contractswith local promoters or agencies were a major means of promotion in the 1990s.In the early 2000s, a localization 1.0 strategy was implemented to develop andexport localized contents. In the mid-2000s, a localization 2.0 strategy was executed by inviting foreignmembers and cooperating with local companies. Specifically, YouTube serviceswere introduced in this period, and albums were replaced with sound sources, which facilitated the shifts of the methods of marketing and distribution, andthen there were gradual changes in overseas expansion strategies as well. As aconsequence, most Korean entertainment companies started to make use ofsocial media for the purpose of marketing. In the late 2000s, social mediamarketing strategies became a norm along with the changes of digitalenvironments expedited by more advanced scientific technology. Everyentertainment company began to be equipped with a new media division or acontents development division.Since 2010, a localization 3.0 strategy has been implemented to make inroadsinto foreign countries through the joint development of contents with localcompanies and through technological export. Concerning marketing strategies by country, offline marketing efforts throughcollaboration with local companies were prevailing in Japan. In China, performances and export of broadcast programs were a major means ofpromotion in the 1990s. In the 2000s, contents were developed in cooperationwith local companies, and business diversification strategies were adopted. Inother Asian regions, social media marketing was rampant, and quality contentsand technology were exported. In the United States, there was a successful case in 2012, which was Psy'sGangnam Style, but it's not yet easy to push into this market. Asian peoplewere still the main target audience, and some agencies tried to enter theAmerican market after finding their ways into South America or Europe. There are emerging markets in some European countries, South America andthe Middle East. Though it's not been long to enter these market, they seem tobe lucrative because there are various favorable factors for market developmentunlike Asia. Although the Korean wave is not yet noticeable in these areas, there is a gradual increase in demand for K-pop. So it's needed to approachthese markets step by step after having a perfect understanding of theircharacteristics. Currently, it's still in the beginning stage, and simple promotionactivities such as performance or autograph events are being held, but how toaddress the markets in collaboration with local companies will be explored indiverse ways. Thus, the Korean popular music agencies pushed ahead withsimilar yet different marketing strategies by time period and by country toextend their business abroad.Meanwhile, it's not possible to take a look at the changes of marketingstrategies by time period or by country in lots of articles of the Korean wave. This study is of significance in that it put the changes of marketing strategiesin order by time period and by country after analyzing various articles and newspapers and interviewing experts in depth. This study is expected to provideKorean popular music experts and researchers with useful information onoverseas marketing strategies and to suggest some of the right directions forfurther overseas expansion of Korean popular music.
