Variants of Chinese characters are divided into ones in broad meaning and narrow meaning. The former differs in character form but character sound and meaning has nothing to do with variants. The later has the same character sound and meaning but differs in character form. However, since the former has a broad range, it can’t b divided into ancient characters, loan characters, simplified characters and etc., the current study defines them as variants in narrow meaning. Variants and ancient characters are divided by differing views, that is, ‘the common period’calls two characters with differing forms used in the same period as variants and ‘the historical period’ calls two characters with differing form used in differing periods as ancient characters. The scholar who first mentioned the meaning of loan characters was Xu Shen, who said that loan characters have their sound but they borrow the form of existing characters with the same sound when there are no character for them. In this regard, variants in narrow meaning refer to ones with the same sound yet differing form. Traditional characters have many strokes but not as many as those of somplified ones but they have the same sound with different form regardless of the number of their strokes. Chinese characters can be divided, according to their periods, into ancient ones and modern ones and what they generally call oracle bone scripts, metallic scripts, scripts of the Warring Countries Period, small seal scripts and etc. all belong to ancient characters while characters after ornamental “seal” characters are seen as modern ones. Accordingly, this thesis divides them into two stages of ancient and modern ones. 『Chinese-Korean Dictionary』compiled by the Korean Culture Research Center of Korea University has gradually taken the character meaning and sound of practical Chinese characters in selecting Chinese characters. The dictionary is compiled with simplified, traditional and variant characters at center and has a total of 15,200 characters. The current thesis looks into the situation of arranging variants on the 2nd version of the dictionary published in 2004 and classifies it into two aspects; regarding character forms, it analyzes the dictionary as one-on-one type, one-on-two type, one-on-three type and one-on-four type and regarding character sound and meaning, it considers the dictionary as relation of the same sound/meaning and relation of inclusion.
