Sluicing is an elliptical phenomenon whose construction is a remnant wh-phrase followed by an invisible part which has been elided. The sluicing phenomenon is proved that it exactly exists in Mandarin Chinese but needs help with shi support. If we apply English sluicing on Mandarin Chinese, the wh-adjunct phrases such as zainali ‘where’, shenmeshihou ‘when’ and weishenme ‘why’ are available but wh-arguments like shei ‘who’ and shenme ‘what’ are not. However, shi support makes all sentences grammatical. So that is, Mandarin Chinese has sluicing phenomenon under shi support. And there are two approaches to analyze sluicing in English, but not both of them can analyze Mandarin Chinese sluicing.Although Mandarin Chinese sluicing is different from English sluicing on some aspects, it still can be analyzed based on English sluicing approach which is called PF Deletion analysis. Another approach LF Copying analysis is not suitable for Mandarin Chinese sluicing because of the appearance of shi. Since the problems showed in analyzing Mandarin Chinese sluicing by LF Copying cannot be resolved, the similarities and differences between English and Mandarin Chinese sluicing under PF Deletion analysis is more comparable.First of all, in the processing of PF Deletion analysis, English carries out overt wh-movement and Mandarin Chinese focus-moves wh-phrases although it is a wh-in-situ language. Both of them move wh-phrases to the front position instead of the imbedded positions. And both wh-movement and focus wh-movement are carrying emphatic effect. Second, the elided part both in English and Mandarin Chinese sluicing is not identical structurally with the antecedent clause but parallel semantically to the antecedent clause. And the correspondences of subjective wh-phrases are always overt and all the correspondences of wh-adjuncts can be implicit in both English and Mandarin Chinese. However, the fact that the objective wh-phrases must be overt in Mandarin Chinese sluicing is different from English. Third, both English and Mandarin Chinese sentences with island violate island conditions, but sluicing can repair island violations in both of the two languages. Fourth, in both English and Mandarin Chinese, wh-movement can recover wh-phrases to their original position. But shi is not the situation in Chinese. Shi issue has three problems. Where is shi in Mandarin Chinese sluicing? Since shi is not recoverable together with wh-phrases, where did shi move from? And why does shi exist in Mandarin Chinese sluicing? I assume shi to be inserted later to check the [+focus] feature just like do support to be inserted to meet tense condition, since shi and do are originally much alike. And then shi is moved to the front position of wh-phrases to check [+Q, +wh] feature.
