A Comparative Study on the Korean and Chinese entertainment programs on the Basis of Cultural Differences: Focusing on, , CHEN XIDepartment of Communication The Graduate SchoolPusan National UniversityABSTRACT This study discusses Culture Differences between Korea and China by comparing the four entertainment programs of the two country. Analysis is done by content analysis method according to Edward T. Hall's High context/ Low context theory and Geert Hofstede's dimensions of national culture. The following hypothesis were raised: Seeing from the aspect of High context/Low context culture theory, Chinese entertainment programs use more metaphor skills in conversation than Korean entertainment programs. Seeing from the aspect of Individualism/Collectivism dimension, Chinese entertainment programs use 'we' as the centre subject of discourse while Korean entertainment programs use 'I'. Seeing from the aspect of Femininity/Masculinity dimension, process is more significant in game or competition of Korean entertainment programs while result is more significant in that of Chinese entertainment programs. Seeing from the aspect of Power Distance dimension, guests seem to be under much control of the MC in Chinese entertainment Programs than in Korean entertainment programs. The comparison has been analyzed through four categories: metaphor skills in conversation, centre subject of discourse, wether process or result is more significant in game or competition, and how far are the guests under control of the MC (master of ceremonies). To briefly summarize the findings of this research, it has been observed that by comparing the four entertainment programs of Korea and China, Korean culture reflects the characteristic of high context, Collectivism, Femininity and less power distance. Meanwhile, Chinese culture relatively shows characteristic of low context, Individualism, Femininity and stronger power distance. Currently, the exchange between Chinese and Korean culture has obtained enormous process, as neighbouring country of East Asia, we can discover numbers of cultural similarity as well as differences when it comes to watching entertainment programs. Based on the cross-cultural exchange between Korea and China, This study also suggests moving on the similarity and identity of Asia through cultural exchange and cooperation between the two countries.
