People often change the course of their behavior under social pressures, as to blend in with the group. Known as social conformity, this phenomenon has been studied for decades; yet, the understanding of its neural correlates is limited. In this study, we aimed to investigate the neural processes of social conformity differentially modulated by the degree of mismatch between social pressure and individual opinion. 33 female participants performed a preference rating/choice task on typefaces for three consecutive experiments, two weeks apart. Social influence manipulation was done by placing a tag on one of the two items, ostensibly informed as the “choice of the majority”, which was intentionally orthogonalized in respect of individual’s preference across trials. We show that conformity – an adaptive decision executed by downsizing original preference and newly updating value with more weight placed on the group preference – involves activity in the lateral orbitofrontal cortex (lOFC) and requires that it override prepotent individual preference encoded by ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC). In addition, when participants went against the group to choose the individually preferred item versus conformed to the majority, greater activity was observed in the bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BNST), which has been reported as the neural sector of ‘threat monitoring’. Interestingly, connectivity between the BNST and lOFC during conformity trials were strong, suggesting that social arousal signals assist decision making in a complex situation where choice transitions and value update are required. Furthermore, as we were interested in the two paths that conformity may take in the absence of social influence, we analyzed trials of persistently choosing the conformed option (“internalized conformity”) versus those that did not (“transient conformity”) during Test 3. Compared to transient conformity trials, the caudate nucleus activated during trials of the internalized conformity trials while the opposite contrast showed activations in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Moreover, smaller degree of mismatch between individual and group preference may be detected by the caudate nucleus, leading to internalized conformity, whereas greater mismatch detected by the mPFC results in only a short-termed conformity. In sum, the present findings help shed light on the underlying processes of social conformity and show that the amount of conflict leads to a specific decision made or not, in an effort to relieve unresolved conflict.
