The purpose of this study was to examine factors influencing problem drinking behavior among Chinese students in Korea with a goal to provide a basis for alcohol prevention programs for Chinese students who are exposed to Korean drinking culture. Main variables included social and environmental factors (stress related to college life, parental alcohol use, peer pressure, and social support) and cognitive factors (alcohol expectancy). Study sample included 200 Chinese students and Korean students from 4 year college in Seoul. A questionnaire was used to collect data. Findings showed that for Korean students, stressful college life, positive alcohol expectancy, negative alcohol expectancy, and social support were significant factors related to problem drinking. For Chinese students in Korea, stressful college life, positive alcohol expectancy, and negative expectancy were found to influence problem drinking. These findings indicate that in order to prevent alcohol related problems, we need to focus on stress experience, positive and negative alcohol expectancy among Chinese students studying in Korean colleges. For more productive and healthier college life among Chinese students, programs should be more sensitive to distinctive characteristics of these students, and need to find alternative activities that meet the needs of the students studying in Korea.
