Toni Morrison is known as one of the greatest African American writers in the 20th century in light of her achievements in presenting unique motifs in complicated structure, she was praised as "the most formally sophisticated novelist in the history of African American literature". (Gates 13) We may feel a little confused when reading Morrison at first, due to shifts between spaces, the past and present, and narrations by the narrator and characters. In the sophisticated structure her novels are coherent unity that covers a wide range of motifs, such as folktales, ancestry, African American superstition, parental love and relations between the two genders in the community. As the first American female writer honored with the Nobel Prize for Literature, Morrison kept reflecting and exploring African American history, destiny and spiritual world with her magic and poetic language and in woman's specially penetrating insight in her works.Although after the Civil War, the ethnicity of African American had got a remarkable series of achievements in many fields, African Americans were still marginalized and dangerous to be destroyed by the white-centered society. Therefore, African Americans were facing the situation of the "Second Liberation", namely how to gain recognition and real equal rights from the society. With great ethical dignity, Morrison has realized the plight of her ethnic group, and creatively brought the major issue of "Second Liberation" to her novels, and there is no doubt Song of Solomon is the most excellent representative work among them.African American culture plays important roles in these people's life. In Song of Solomon, Morrison reconstructed some traditional African American culture element (folktales, myths, music and religious beliefs) on modern significance, with African American cultural information in her novel, she consciously took up the historical mission to inculcate African Americans' cultural self-knowledge, and heightened their adequate cognition and perception on racial evolution and future, inspired their ethnic consciousness collectively to achieve the "Second Liberation" of African American whole. Not only the collective problem, Morrison but also concerned on the way for the "Second Liberation" of African American individual, namely self-identity construction under modern situation. In Song of Solomon, she delicately depicted a group of typical images of African American males and females to expound on the process of pursuit of individual advancement and to allow African Americans to examine proper way to explore self-affirmation on a deeper level. This thesis focuses on the "Second Liberation" of the African American and offers some suggestions for the group to gain the "Second Liberation". Meanwhile, the research on the "Second Liberation" of the African American is not yet completely finished, there is still much space to explore the future of the African American by analyzing her other novels so as to find out much more helpful information. This needs further discussion.
