Petroleum-based plastic materials such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) dominate today’s plastics packaging market because of their high strength, light weight, low cost, easy processability, and good water barrier properties. Annually, plastics are produced about 250 million tons worldwide, which is the largest user of crude oil after energy and transportation, and more than 40% of the plastics are used for packaging with almost half of them are used for food packaging in the form of films, sheets, bottles, cups, tubs, and trays, etc. However, degradation of such petroleum-based plastic materials requires a long time and most of them end up over-burdening the environment. Concerns over the environmental problems and the exhaust of natural resources caused by the petroleum-based plastic materials raised interest in developing alternative materials to substitute the petroleum-based plastic materials using environmentally friendly materials like biopolymers. Some of the candidates for the biodegradable biopolymers which have high potential for substitute use of petroleum-based plastics include PBAT (polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate), PLA (polylactide), PBS (polybutylene succinate), and EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol). In the present study, PBAT films were prepared by different methods such as solvent casting method, thermo-compression method, and extrusion blow method. And their film properties such as tensile strength, elongation at break, transmittance, and thermal stability were compared. Among the films tested, films prepared by the extrusion blow method exhibited excellent transparency, thermal stability, and tensile properties, so it is expected to be produced industrial scale without any problem. Composite films with various combinations of PBAT and other biopolymers including PBS, PLA, and EVOH were prepared by melt mixing with a twin screw extruder and thermo-compression in order to solve the problems of those biopolymer films such as low flexibility and brittleness. Flexibility of those biopolymer films was significantly increased by blending with PBAT.Agar, a natural biopolymer, was plasticized and blended with PBAT to make a composite film using the extrusion and thermo-compression method. The PBAT/agar composite film exhibited higher water vapor permeability and water holding and water vapor adsorption capability. The results indicate that biodegradable films can be prepared by various biopolymers in alone or combination of the polymers, and their film properties are depend on the type of polymers, blending or mixing ratio, and preparation methods. The biodegradable films whose properties changed or controlled as desired are expected to have a high potential for the industrial application of various food packaging to extend the shelf-life and maintain the quality of the packaged foods.
