There is an increasing demand for new airport facilities according to the rapid development of relevant industries, and the maintenance of the existing facilities is also becoming increasingly important. Accordingly, the design, construction and maintenance of the airport facilities are being studied to ensure their improved quality, but studies on the environmental qualities are still not satisfactory. There is a worldwide effort to reduce the greenhouse gas emission with the full effectivation of the Kyoto Protocol in 2020 that includes the participation of developing countries. Korea also presented low-carbon green-growth as one of the visions of national development, and prepared relevant regulations including carbon trading system. Therefore, it is inevitable for the continued use and development of airport facilities to analyze the environmental quality of relevant facilities and establish further improvement plans. In this study, the LCA analysis technique, which quantitatively calculates the environmental load from the entire life cycle that includes production, use and disposal of a product, was used to assess the environmental load of the airport pavement. The LCA analysis is a decision-making tool that is widely used for the environmental load assessment of the manufacturing, construction and infrastructure sectors, of which the procedures and processes are specified by the International Standard Organization. After the basic data for the environmental assessment are provided by the LCA analysis of the airport pavement, the analysis results will be used to establish the environmental quality improvement plans. In this study, the LCA analysis was conducted for the entire life cycle of the airport pavement to quantitatively determine the environmental load in six categories of the Environmental Product Declaration (resource depletion, global warming, influence on ozone layer, acidification, eutrophication, photochemical oxidant generation). The LCA analysis results showed that 98.4% of the total environmental load from the entire life cycle of the airport pavement was generated from the global warming category. CO2 accounted for 88.24% of the total emission: 38.03% in the initial construction stage, 61.96% in the maintenance stage, and 0.01% in the destruction stage. In addition, the LCA analysis was conducted for the wide parallel pavement, which improves the economic feasibility andconstructability of the airport pavement. The LCA analysis results showed that it led to an average of 3.53% environmental load increase in six categories from the general airport pavement, and 3.19% increase in the total environmental load material generation. Accordingly, to reduce the environmental load of the wide parallel pavement technique, the warm mix asphalt was applied to some sections, and the capacity of dump trucks was increased from 15 tons to 25 tons. The established reduction plan was applied to actual cases, and its reduction effect was verified via the LCA analysis. The introduction of the warm mix asphalt and the replacement of dump trucks accounted for 3.26% of the 3.53% that was the average increase rate in the six categories due to the wide parallel pavement. The total weight of the environmental load material was reduced from 6.53E+08 kg to 6.45E+08kg, which was a 1.21% improvement compared with the general airport pavement.
