Willy Russell’s Educating Rita and David Mamet’s Oleanna both deal with the teacher-student relationship. Although their extended themes and their outcomes differ from each other, both plays accentuate the contrast between the professor (Frank in Educating Rita and John in Oleanna) and the student (Rita in Educating Rita and Carol in Oleanna). Chapter 1 of this thesis focuses on the protagonists’ course of identity transformation through exposure and acquisition of different culture and language. Since they all come from different social groups, their difference is manifested in their distinct languages and tastes. Both Rita and Carol see the acquisition of language as power, and struggle to learn Frank and John’s language in order to fulfill their desire for education and to overcome their oppressed situation. As Rita and Carol get educated, their language changes significantly in correlation with escalated power. Chapter 2 centers on the protagonists’ difficulties with different teaching and learning expectations from each other. Frank and John think negatively about university education, and at times they do not practice the accepted professional behavior of the university professors. Frank and John struggle to secure their position and authority over their students, but the struggle of Rita and Carol for education would lift them above and beyond the boundaries of class, culture, and gender. Education is beneficial for Rita and Carol who have transformed into a confident being and overcome the difference and social exclusion from Frank and John’s world, but they have paid the price for their education by sacrificing something else.
