Recently, public interest for rooftop greening has been growing as a solution against urban environmental issues. This study has been carried out to test if the artificial soil mixed with composted coffee ground is appropriate for rooftop greening. Experimental plots were established with three types of artificial soils, 1) orchid stone grain, 2) perlite, and 3) ecosoil and at three different soil depth. Native and introduced blueberry species were used for plant material. Consumption of coffee has been increased every year in Korea, which drove people to explore ways to recycle coffee wastes. Coffee wastes have constituents relatively even and are easy to standardize composting processes. The mixing rate to soil can be figured out easily as well. The composted coffee ground, however, has rarely been used for rooftop greening and the availability needs to be tested. Blueberries are noticed by people for economic values due to ornamental use and edibility. In order to investigate their responses to different soils, leaf length, leaf width, shoot length, photosynthetic activity, soil temperature, and soil moisture were measured and compared. Plant growth responses were positive on the soils of orchid stone grain and soils of perlite. Photosynthetis activities were also higher on those soil types. The responses, however, were not good on ecosoil which is thought to have higher amount of organic matter and nitrogen. Composted coffee ground are proved to supply nutrients to plants in a long term. It is concluded that composted coffee ground are available to make artificial soils for rooftop greening. Although there were some difficulties in this study due to the limitations for space and time, it may help to provide better artificial soils.
