In this study, a decision-support model is proposed for sustainable development of groundwater subject to seawater intrusion. The proposed model which is a simulation-optimization (S/O) model consists of sharp-interface model and Genetic Algorithm (GA) coupled with Physically Creep Mutation (PCM) for developing wells to satisfy the sustainable demand of freshwater in coastal areas. The objectives of the S/O model are maximizing freshwater pumping rates for freshwater production wells, minimizing saltwater pumping rates from freshwater production wells and minimizing freshwater injection rate for freshwater injection wells. Impacts of pumping and injection on entire aquifer are also considered. The sharp-interface model using in the proposed S/O model is firstly verified against known analytical solution (Strack’s solution) on a hypothetical semi-infinite homogeneous aquifer. Laboratory experiments in sand tanks are conducted to investigate if the sharp-interface model can estimate freshwater-saltwater interface and saltwater contents at pumping wells. The experiments involve not only excessive pumping from freshwater wells but also saltwater pumping and freshwater injection, which may be used to mitigate saltwater intrusion or for artificial recharge.A new computational procedure identified as PCM was developed to improve the performance of GA, which has a tendency to converge towards near optimum or even arbitrary points rather than the global optimum of the problem. PCM GA searches for the best solution in a much smaller parameter space. In the end, a couple of examples are illustrated to present the applicability and capability of the proposed S/O model. The examples include two benchmark problems which were elaborated with analytical optimization solution by Park and Aral (2004) and Cheng et al. (2000). The other various examples are presented using the S/O model to obtain maximum freshwater pumping and restore a freshwater production well by injecting freshwater on the inhomogeneous aquifers.
