Environmentally fiendly fruit production was rapidly increased by consumers' interest and government regulation for the fruits. This study was established to compare the soil physical, chemical, and biochemical properties in soils grown in organically and conventionally management systems, as well as to compare the fruit qualities and antioxidant compounds in 'Niitaka' pear trees in organic and conventional orchards. Organic system had lower soil bulk density, solid phase, and penetration resistance than the conventional system. Soil pH and organic matter increased from March to August, and the values were greater for the organic system than the conventional system. Total nitrogen (N) and phosphorous concentrations in soils decreased from March to August, and the N and P were greater for the organic and conventional soils, respectively. Soil microbial biomass carbon increased 36% in the organic system and 15% in the conventional system in a season. Soil microbial biomass N was greater in June than March or August, and the organic system had a greater biomass N compared to the conventional system in a season. Dehydrogenase and chitinase activities in soils were greater in June than in March or August. β-glucosidase activity declined in both systems in a season, while the acid phosphatase activity increased. The organic system had greater enzyme activities during all the seasons, except for the acid phosphatase activity in June. Fruits grown in the organic system appeared to have more dark red color on the fruit surface. There were no significant differences for the fruit weight, soluble solids, acidity, firmness, and stone cell in the farming systems. Organic fruits had a greater K concentration than the conventional fruits, and all fruits had similar P, Ca, and Mg concentrations in the flesh parts. Peel, flesh, and juice parts in the organic fruits had greater phenolic compounds compared to the conventional fruits, and the peel parts had much greater antioxidant compounds than the flesh parts. Flavonoid contents in the fruits had similar to the both systems. All fruits grown in the conventional and organic systems had a similar DPPH (α, α-diphenyl-β-picryl-hydrazyl) radical-scavenging activity in the peel, and the DPPH radical-scavenging activity was greater on the 100gㆍL-1 and 200gㆍL-1 in the fresh parts in the organic fruits. Only few grams of peel parts had greater abilities to remove the DPPH radical-scavenging but the fresh parts did not. The phenolic and flavonoid compounds were positively related to the DPPH radical-scavenging activity in the peel and fresh parts. There were no significant differences for the nitrite scavenging activity in the peel and fresh parts in fruits, and few amounts (50gㆍL-1) of peel parts had a high scavenging activity of 94%. In this study, Actual N of 200g from all nutrient source treatments was applied for each data tree, and five trees per treatment were randomly chosen for the study. Control was a NPK chemical fertilizer (15N-9P-10K, DongbuHitek CO., Korea), and organic treatments included oil cake, humic, and chitin incubated composts. All treatments applied annually under the tree canopy at the end of March from 2008 to 2009. Soil chemical and microbial properties were analyzed in March, May, and August in 2009. Soil physical properties were not different among the treatments. Plots treated by organic nutrient sources had greater organic matter, total nitrogen, potassium, and magnesium concentrations than the control, and the variables were not consistent by the organic treatments. Microbial biomass nitrogen and carbon, dehydrogenase, acid-phosphatase, and chitinase activities increased as a season advanced, except for the β-glucosidase. All the organic nutrient sources, especially oil cake and chitin composts that had lower C:N than the humic compost, increased the microbial variables compared to the control.
