There has been a long history of culture exchange between China and Japan. Chinese characters are used in both Chinese and Japanese. These two languages interact each other, generating large amounts of words written in the same or similar way, which are so-called Sino-Japanese homographs. The homographs have similarities as well as differences in terms of meaning and usage between Chinese and Japanese.By far many research studies are mainly focused on the comparison and analysis on the difference of Sino-Japanese homographs from the perspective of semantic analysis. However, two major problems exist in the current studies. First, most are carried out from the view of semantic difference, while few from the connotation nuance. Secondly, study on morpheme of Sino-Japanese homograph is also limited.Based on previous studies, this paper compared and analyzed 82 two-character homographs among 360 Chinese words of top 1000 high-frequency words in survey of modern Japanese language, all-round magazine part.First, the author introduced the purpose and method of this paper and described the research situation of Sino-Japanese homographs at home and abroad. Then the historical background and process of Sino-Japanese homographs forming are systematically discussed. These led to the core part of this paper, classifying the Sino-Japanese homographs by connotation and analyzing their similarities and differences in detail by taking examples. Besides, the author also compared and analyzed the similarities and differences on connotation and morpheme. In the comparison and analysis of specific vocabulary, some key points which Japanese learners should take note of were put forward. Those are of considerable practical significance for the Chinese in Japanese education and for the Japanese in Chinese education. This paper is put forth in the hope to stimulate more discussions and studies on this topic.
