“Prolonged sound rules” refer to the condition in pronunciation where the end sound of the first word is linked to the following word that begins with a vowel. This study looks at the cognitive recognition ability of Japanese multicultural elementary students and Korean elementary students through reading and makes comparative study based on differences in cultural and academic year and uses Korean version Boston Naming Test(K-BNT-C) to evaluate the correlations in vocabulary acquisition. The subjects of the study were forty children residing in the Chungbuk province; ten students each of Japanese multicultural children in the 1st and 2nd year of elementary school, and ten students each of average Korean students in the 1st and 2nd year of elementary school. Fifty words and fifty sentences were selected from the school text books to make a comparative study on the cognitive recognition ability on prolonged sound. The result suggests that first, there was no significant statistical difference in cognitive recognition ability for prolonged sound rules between elementary school children in Japanese multicultural households and average Korean households based on cultural background. Secondly, the cognitive ability for prolonged sound rules in Japanese multicultural elementary school children and average Korean children had no correlation between culture and school year in the sentence level but as the children advanced in school year, the cognitive ability for prolonged sound rule increased in the word level. Thirdly, with regards to cognitive ability for prolonged sound rules according to the different school years amongst Japanese multicultural elementary school children and average Korean school children, the children in the 2nd year achieved higher word scores in prolonged sound rules than children in the 1st year. Fourthly, there was a meaningful correlations between cognitive ability for prolonged sound rules and vocabulary acquisition ability as tested by K-BNT-C in Japanese multicultural elementary school children. The results of the study revealed that the children should be taught phoneme recognition through words, letters and syllables according to the their cognitive recognition ability of prolonged sound rules and be provided with a more systematic approach to educating prolonged sound rules considering their ages and school year. The results can be used as basic materials for the development of teaching program that is needed to teach colloquial language and to enhance cognitive recognition ability of prolonged sound rules.
