This study is an attempt to find a desirable way to teach English through literary text. Although literature has a lot of advantages in language teaching, it has been disregarded in English class for a long time. Language and literature can not separated from each other. Literature is composed of language and contains values and worldviews of the society. In this thesis, I emphasized literary text's potentiality as an authentic and meaningful material as the follows. First, I presented the usefulness of literary text with theoretical background. And then, I analyzed 12 High school English text books and found out their current problems. To complement the problems and verify the effectiveness, I designed learner-centered activities using the literary text 'The Old Man and the Sea'. It might be difficult to adopt literature in high school class. However, if the teacher brings flexibility and creativity, literature can be valuable for learning sources.
