AbstractThe essence of sovereignty of Dokdo is the dispute for territory between Korea and Japan. Nowadays, Korean garrison has dominated Dokdo, however, part of Japanese scholars claim that the sovereignty of Dokdo should be returned to Japan. Most of Japanese citizens also believe that the sovereignty of Takeshima will be regained sooner or later. Meanwhile, Korean citizens are also concerning about that issue. For Korean, the sovereignty of Dokdo is not only the problem of territory, which also includes the development needs of national defense strategy, and the struggle for oceanic rights. What’s more, it is related to historical struggle and reflection of historic recognition and self-recognition. In recent years, the issue of ‘sovereignty of Dokdo’ is increasingly escalating, and it has been the focus which affects the relationship between Korea and Japan.Recently the mainstream point of Korean academia holds that the issue of Dokdo dated back to 1952. On Jan.18th, 1952, Korean government published Presidential Declaration of the rights for subjacent ocean,( also called Peace Line Declaration or Lee Seongwan Coastline ) which was protested by Japan ten days later. In the meantime, Japan denied the relevant content on the sovereignty of Dokdo in the declaration, thus staring the dispute for Dokdo from then on and lasted till now. On one hand, the achievements of Korean academia enormously appear. Many academic organizations, delegated by Dokdo Research Association, published a great many papers and works, researching the issue of Dokdo from the perspective of history, geography and international law. On the other hand, the Japanese academias also study the issue of Dokdo from the aspects of history, international law and so on. There are mainly four parts in this thesis:In the first part, the thesis introduces the natural condition of Dokdo and the realistic significance of the sovereignty of Dokdo. In the second part, the origin and the processes of sovereignty of Dokdo are investigated and also the sovereignty of Dokdo and the processes are given details. The third part is mainly about the mainstream points of Korean academia on Dokdo and chief historical facts .Though Korean Academia has achieved a large number of works and retorted the acclamation of Japanese, many details need to be explored deeply. In the future, Korean scholars have a long way to go in the process of research. The fourth part is about the mainstream points and historical facts of Japanese. Not all Japanese scholars advocate the Japan has the sovereignty over Dokdo, and even part of them support the view of Korean scholars.Although different views arise from Japan and Korea, there are more convincing evidences and definite details on the Korean side. After the Treaty of the UN Ocean Law took effect, the dispute of the Dokdo actually extends to the oceanic rights. Therefore, the disparity on the issue of Dokdo will continue to exist and could lead to more conflicts on oceanic territory. In the struggle of maintaining the sovereignty of Dokdo, Korean government and citizens contributed a great deal to solve the issue, which set a good example for us.Key words: Dokdo, sovereignty of Dokdo, disputes between Korea and Japan
