Hwalzabon(moveable types) classical novels were published firstly in 1910s. It emerged with the development of printing technology in modern ages and was widely published and read until 1930s. From a social point of view, Hwalzabon(moveable types) classical novels appeared during the period that new civilization came in and feudalism dissolved. From a political point of view, it appeared during the period that Korea(Joseon) perished and Japan established its colony in Korea(Joseon). Therefore, Hwalzabon classical novels possess significant value because they can reflect the social changes in that period. At that time, a large number of Korean classical novels were adapted into Hwalzabon classical novels. There are also lots of adaptations which are adapted from Chinese classical novels. Although, those adaptations of Chinese classical novels have a close correlation with Chinese classical novels, it is undoubted that they were reconstructed according to the social background of Korea(Joseon) at that time and had their distinctive features. Among those adaptations of Chinese classical novels, there are three works called , and . These three works were rewritten from a famous Chinese classical novel called . This novel was written in the Ming Dynasty and was a very long piece including 100 chapters. The published time of this novel is not certain, but in general, many scholars presume that it was published in 1567~1619. It was written on the basis of the real history that King of Zhou Dynasty subjugated King of Shang Dynasty mixed with the writer's imagination. This study set a goal at verifying the relation between the Chinese classical novel and these three Korean adaptations and also researching the background and meaning that why it was adapted at that time. To compare the differences between Korean adaptations and Chinese original novels, 'analysis of narrative paragraphs' will be the important basic method. Firstly, dividing each novel into some main events according to the development of the story. Then, dividing each events into small narrative paragraphs and comparing how the narrative paragraphs in adaptations are different from them in original novel, what narrative paragraphs are added and which of them are eliminated. Moreover, quoting the text from each novel to show subtle differences which can not be revealed only by comparing narrative paragraphs. The most distinct adapting aspect of is that contents which can emphasis the occult power of T'aikung wang are added and contents which have no relationship with T'aikung wang are eliminated. This is because in the semi-colonial and semi-feudal background, the masses longed for heroes who can overthrow the decadent and old society and establish a new and peaceful society. After the is adapted into , there are some changes on two characters who called Heechang and Hwanggon. In the original work, both of them think that even the king is dissipated and depraved, as vassals, they have to obey to the king absolutely and can't rebel forever. However, in the rewritten work, these thoughts of them are eliminated. In the stable feudal society, the governing class used to control the mass with this cognition, but in the wretched colonial society, this cognition is no longer a good method instead of a lock that will bind the mass to resist against the aggressors. That's why these feudal thoughts are eliminated. In the adaptation novel , there is a subtle but important difference from the original novel. That is, when T'aikung wang begin to do business in order to make a living after coming to human world, the reasons that he fails in business are different in two works. In the original work, he fails in business because the weather is so hot that no one buys something. While in the adaptation, he fails because the soldiers capture all the things which are supposed to sell. This change is to reflect and satirize the evildoing that Japanese soldiers had done in Korea at that time in a roundabout way. After is rewritten into , there are also various differences. The first one is that, in the original chinese work, the king's power is obviously stronger than the vassal's power, but in the korean adaptation, the vassal's power is obviously stronger than the kind's. This aspect reflects that in feudal Korea(Joseon), especially in the end of feudal Korea, kings had no real authority and was always controled and dominated by vassals. In the adaptation , the contents that has no relationship with Sodalki are eliminated. Sodalki is a very brutal woman. She tempted the king by her beauty and killed many faithful vassals. It can be said that she was the most powerful person in the imperial household at that time. In Korean adaptation, to reflect and criticize those evil powerful women in politics like Sodalki in the semi-feudal and semi-colonial society at that time, contents that about Sodalki are abstracted and rewritten into . If the writers can not directly express their thoughts, it is necessary for them to criticize or express their emotions according to other country or dynasty's persons or events. In Chinese history, Sodalki is the symbol of lewd and evil woman. After the chinese classical novel coming into Korea, korean writer extracted the contents about Sodalki and rewrote it into . Though the adaptation has deep relation with this chinese classical novel , it is also influenced by the enormous images of evil and lewd women that emerged from Korean classical novels. These evil women in Korean classical novels are as much lewd as Sodalki and they have done the similar wicked evildoing and have similar personalities with Sodalki. In this study, the relation between Korean Hwazalbon classical novels, and the Chinese classical novel is verified. Though these three works are adaptations of the chinese original novel, undoubtedly they are reconstructed according to social background of Korea(Joseon) at that time and have their distinctive features. Through this study, I hope that it can contribute to the research of Hwazalbon(moveable type) classical novels.
