With the wide use of computer, the relationship between computer operation and musculoskeletal disorders has been investigated by many researchers. Keyboard and mouse operation are also risk factors to musculoskeletal disorders. The aims of this study were to determine whether there were differences in upper extremity muscle activity between wrist support mouse pad and traditional mouse pad during mouse operation, and to find out whether the measured muscle activity level increase with the time of prolonged operation. Ten healthy college students volunteered to participate in this experiment. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to measure and record the activity of the muscles (extensor digitorum, extensor carpi ulnaris, anterior deltoid and upper trapezius) of the 10 subjects during mouse operation. The collected EMG data were normalized and expressed as a percentage of reference voluntary contraction (%RVC). Two-way ANOVA with repeated measures with a significance level of 0.05 was used for the EMG data analysis. There were significant differences in the EMG amplitude (%RVC) of muscles (extensor digitorum, extensor carpi ulnaris, upper trapezius) during mouse operation with traditional mouse pad and wrist support mouse pad, with the use of wrist support mouse pad significantly reducing the muscle activity. There was no significant decrease of anterior deltoid muscular activity when using a wrist support mouse pad. Regarding muscle activity in the sub-period comparison, extensor carpi ulnaris, anterior deltoid and upper trapezius muscle activity all significantly increased with the time of operation. This shows that the time of mouse operation has something to do with the upper extremity load. To compare the completion rate, number of errors and accuracy, paired t-test was used for data analysis. In terms of completion rate with the use of wrist support and traditional mouse pad respectively, the former was significantly lower than the latter. But there were no significant differences in the number of errors and accuracy rate between wrist support mouse pad and traditional mouse pad. In summary, this experiment shows that the use of wrist support mouse pad can reduce upper extremity stress compared with traditional mouse pad. In a sense, wrist support mouse pad can ease and help relieve musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremity to a certain extent.A thesis submitted to Committee of the Graduate School of Hanseo University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master in February, 2009
