Nowadays, there are a lot of students receiving private education at tremendous costs. Spending a huge amount of money in private tutoring is now one of the social problems to be ironed out on a national level in China. The researcher wanted to examine how much private tutoring spreaded and how parents perceived that, in an effort to pave the way for private education to take root in the right manner. The reasearch questions were posed as follows:First, what is the actual situation o f private education?Second, what are parents' attitudes toward private education in China? The subjects in this study were parents whose children were in their fifth year of elementary schools, in the third year of middle schools and in the third year of high schools at Weihai. Nine schools were randomly chosen from Weihai downtown, suburb and rural areas. In each of these schools, 50 parents had the children in the same grade. 450 questionnaires were distributed. The responses from 350 parents were gathered with a response rate of 84.6%, and out of which350 answer sheets were chosen for analysis. The 12-item questions used in this study were prepared under the guidance of the reasearcher's main professor based on his earlier studies, which covered the reality of private education by 6 items and parents' awareness by the other 6 items. For data processing, two group variables were generally selected, including students and parents. The student variables included grade. The parent variables were jobs, the educational backgrounds, the places they lived and the monthly avarage income(less than 2000yuan, between 2000 and 4000yuan, between 4000 and6000yuan, between 6000 and 8000yuan).The frequency and percentage were calculated for each of these items, and x2(Chi-square) test was conducted to identify the impact of the selected variables, the level of significance was seated at a=0.5.The findings of this study were as follows:First : Due to theresidence difference, those who lives in rural areas seldom take private lessons. Unlike the students who live in the city doing home work after school. those who live in rural areas are more likely to helo parents to do house work. To solve this problem, school leaders in China should show more care to the low-income class.Second: Among the private courses students take, English is a major one which is mainly conducted in a gathered classroom with 8 hours a week and 600-800 RMB per month. The tutoring fee increases with the increasing of income. However, the tutoring fee is not a burdon to the families, from which a fact could be drawn that public education still plays a major role in China.Third : As a supplement to the public education, what most parents concerned about the private education is that the private education puts too much emphasis on exams. To better the private education, efforts should be made to improve the private education to acomprehensive-ability-oriented one.
