“Chōsenjousi” is a series of postcards with the theme of Korean emotions, consisting of photographs, illustrations, and Japanese poems that reflect the lives of the Korean people. It’s easy to believe that photographs show the reality as they are, but postcards hide room for editing by the planner’s intentions. That is, the internal structure of the intentionally edited postcard influenced the reader’s analysis and functioned as a literary text that created a distorted image of Korea. “Chōsenjousi” was planned by Japan. In other words, Korea that appeared in the postcard had no choice but was a virtual image of Korea that was represented in the eyes of Japan. Interestingly, however, the picture captures the observer’s intentions as well as the subject. “Chōsenjousi” is a historical document that reveals Japan’s desire for colonial Korea.
