In this paper, we propose a method to correct the initial position error that occurs when a 3D LiDAR is mounted on an autonomous vehicle. The 3D LiDAR must be mounted to match the vehicle’s reference coordinate axis. If the LiDAR is mounted inconsistently with the reference coordinate axis, an error may occur when measuring the distance to surrounding objects. First, the reference image generated by the LiDAR is predicted when the LiDAR is mounted to coincide with the vehicle’s coordinate axis on a flat road surface without obstacles. Next, the predicted image is compared with the image obtained from the LiDAR mounted on the actual vehicle. The inclination angle with respect to the reference coordinate axis is calculated using the difference between the predicted image and the actual image. Finally, the initial error is corrected by transforming the axes corresponding to the inclined angle.
