Drinking water has been known that not only for sustain the human life, also giving many health-giving benefits. According to the survey from World Health Organization (WHO), in South Korea, male and female adults drink water about 945 ml and 766 ml individually per day that is much lower than the recommended guideline 1.5 L to 2 L. To encourage people to drink plenty of water every day, this paper presents a non-invasive water level measurement capacitive sensor to measure the volume of the water in the cup automatically. Before the experiment, the FEA (Finite Element Analysis) simulation was performed to verify the idea feasibility and find the optimized sensor shape design. Based on the simulation results, the sensor was manufactured and attached to the outside of a plastic cup for the sensor performance test. Through adding the water into the cup, the capacitance variation of the designed sensor was observed by a LCR meter and the results were compared with the simulation results. As the experimental results shown, the proposed capacitive sensor is able to accurately measure the water level in the cup by calculated the capacitance varied as the water level varied. In the future, the sensor will be improved and implemented into developing a smart cup.
