Vanguard Monthly, published by vanguard Association which was one of the core societies in the nationalism literary movement, mainly carried literary works with high artistic value, which can represent the artistic achievements of the nationalist literary movement. It was especially true of the war novels, which gave unique interpretations of anti-imperialist war and the civil wars for national unification from the perspective of nationalism. The Kuomintang and the Communist Party had different definitions of anti-imperialism, and different attitudes on border issues, so the nationalist literary works touched upon some uncommon themes. The positive publicity of the East China Road Affair in The battle of the National Gates showed that the KMT's determination to maintain territorial integrity. Moreover, this article also has the historical significance of recovering the historical truth. The tragic description about Tibet dispute in the Victorious Death exhibits the nationalist aspirations of the Kuomintang to work hand in hand with the ethnic minority groups for a better nation. It also proved that it was hard for the vulnerable Nanjing Government to realize the historical mission of Republicizing China in beset with internal and external troubles. Nationalist literary writers took the side of the Kuomintang, and stressed that the aim of the civil wars such as the Central Plains War, the Northern Expedition was for the national reunification. The Old Gold and Sanli Temple at Dusk highlighted the evils done by the warlords, giving justifications for the Northern Expedition while emphasizing the role of publicity. The Longhai line and Revolution in a Flash praised the bravery of the soldiers for the national unity on the one hand, and questioned the justice of the war through the soldiers feelings of the absurdity of the civil war. The war-themed novels in the Vanguard Monthly reflected the nationalist view of the Kuomintang, including the two aspects of resistance and construction. Therefore, the anti-imperialism and the building of a unified national state were the two important themes of the nationalist literary movement. Although the nationalist literary movement was politically partisan, many writers favored spontaneously for nationalism. In their writings, they propagandized the nationalism and centralized authority in accordance to the expectations of the KMT. In addition, they scrutinized the government policies and the social situations and made critical comments on their malpractice and disadvantages.
