Rural tourism is widely studied as it is recognized as an effective strategy to promote social and economic development and revitalization in rural areas. However, previous studies have shown differences in research content between developed and developing countries. To identify these differences, this study conducted co-occurrence word analysis on 602 rural tourism articles in the KCI-Korean journals within the Web of Science database and 1,372 rural tourism articles in the CSSCI within the CNKI academic database in China that were published between 2002 and 2023. The results showed that, first, the core research areas in Korea focused on the behavioral and psychological characteristics of tourists. China’s research tended to respond to national development policies. Second, in Korea, a keyword cluster representing five research topics, including "green tourism," "consumer behavior," "market research," "rural tourism experience," and "sustainable tourism," was formed. In China, a cluster of keywords on five research topics was formed, including "rural revitalization," "human-earth system," "sustainable development," "return to rural essence," and "rural social problems." Third, in Korea, research on rural tourism has gradually shifted from a single-market approach to industry convergence. In China, the research emphasized the role of rural tourism as an engine for the overall development of rural society. These analysis results confirmed that there are differences between developed and developing countries, and based on the results, implications are discussed and future research directions are presented.
