This study investigates the performance of expansion–deflection (E–D) nozzles with reduced lengths through experimental and numerical analyses. Two E–D nozzles were designed for the study: one with 80 % of the length of a bell nozzle and the other with a 30 % reduction in the nozzle extension length. Pneumatic experimental equipment was constructed using a diffuser that could simulate an altitude of 16 km. The experimental and numerical results showed a thrust difference of only 1.1 % between the two E–D nozzles. Moreover, the thrust differences between the E–D nozzles with and without a 30 % reduction in nozzle extension length were within 1.0 %. Therefore, the extension length of the E–D nozzle can be reduced without deteriorating the thrust in a high-altitude environment.
