“Climbing High,” one of Du Fu’s masterpieces, characterized by rich content and the remarkably profound emotional resonance between its lines, has inspired numerous rhyme-following compositions by Korean poets. Howerver, as they have received little scholarly attention, an investigation into the rhyme-following compositions related to “Climbing High” promises to foster a deeper understanding of Du Fu’s poetic artistry and further enrich our knowledge of the achievements of Chinese literature beyond its native borders. Amid the tumult of the later Joseon dynasty, literati transcended their own era; resonating emotionally with Du Fu’s poem “Climbing High,” they produced a substantial body of rhyme-following compositions. This study, grounded in the realm of Du Fu’s poetic studies, takes a dual approach by examining both the techniques of poetic composition, as well as the reception of these works through a detailed comparative analysis of Du Fu’s “Climbing High” and the subsequent rhyme-following poems by Joseon literati. This exploration, makes clear that Joseon literati undertook a comprehensive study of Du Fu’s techniques, primarily focusing on emulating such innovative aspects as the evocation of emotions through scenery, antithesis, and the use of onomatopoeia, and rhythm, found predominantly in “Climbing High.” While not reaching the literary zenith of Du Fu, these rhyme-following compositions from the Joseon dynasty transcend mere literature, embodying a refined manifestation of their fervent patriotism rooted in Confucian ideology, along with a heightened sense of vigilance. Furthermore, they reflect the profound influence of Du Fu’s heartfelt concerns for the nation and its people.
