This paper explains the development of nondestructive evaluation techniques for subsonic speed capsule vehicles using ultrasonic and vibration applications. The guided wave phenomena, with their strengths in structural health monitoring (SHM) and long-range inspection, are applied to assess the integrity of an aluminum (AL2024-T351) main frame body and chassis. To verify micro wall-thinning below 5% of the thickness, appropriate Lamb wave modes are discussed for utilizing the amplitude attenuating method, acoustic nonlinearity, and ultrasonic natural frequency. A finite element analysis of the amplitude vibrations revealed the occurrence of natural frequency shifts in the thinned aluminium plate. Using the Lamb wave A1 mode, we observed the effects of amplitude attenuation in relation to the levels of wall-thinning. The detection method based on acoustic nonlinearity showed a linear relationship with the defect levels. In conclusion, these evaluation techniques can be considered as reasonable approaches to diagnose the condition of wall-thinning with good sensitivity.
