We investigate the macroeconomic impact of the adoption of production automation technologies on employment and its mechanism using South Korea’s ‘Robot Industry Fact Sheet’ maintained by Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement (KIRIA). The existing studies have yet to reach a consensus about this topic whereby the results depend on countries, research periods, and the scope of employment. Despite its necessity, academic studies on the effect of automation on employment in South Korea have been at its nascent stage. Guided by our theoretical analysis, we leverage the regional variations in automation adoption to tease out the employment effects. We find that automation reduces employment in South Korea, and the negative effects are greater among female workers with high school diplomas or higher, suggesting that the displacement effects are dominant in our sample.
