In the 70s, Space Battleship Yamato played a crucial role in the formation of anime fandom in Japan. Previous studies have interpreted Space Battleship Yamato in relation to World War II and questioned its historical consciousness and political orientation. This study, however, traces the process of popularization of anime from the perspective of the teenage fans who watched Space Battleship Yamato at the time. Thus, this paper examined the anime magazines that were popular among teenagers and interpreted the discourses in the magazines. In particular, this paper examined parody comics, character illustrations, sci-fi settings, and internal drawings of battleships published in anime magazines. This paper found that the teenagers of the 70s formed their own fan culture with a different viewpoint than the older generation. Especially, the teenage fans used new media, anime magazines, to subvert existing authority and to establishing horizontal network. It is worth noting the active role of the teenage fans in the development fo anime culture, which will later progress into otaku culture.
