In this study, we developed and evaluated an international collaborative learning program between Japanese and Indonesian high schools, which stems from the perspective of ESD. Various resources were tapped during the development of the program, such as the utilization of teachers who were involved in the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV), with focus in the area of environmental education. The consistent involvement of many stakeholders proved effective in supporting collaborative activities between the two countries’ high schools, as well as within the local community, which had previously been difficult to implement. Eventually, programs on themes related to sustainable development, such as environmental education, community development, and ecotourism, were developed in rural and forest areas in Indonesia. In program evaluation, the data collected showed an increase in positive awareness of different cultures, both in Japanese and Indonesian high school students. Several Japanese students who participated in the program chose to continue their studies in Indonesia, and vice versa. This conveys a possibility of the program, particularly of their experiences, having a significant influence in high school students’ choices in career, as well as destinations for studying abroad.
