As an important means of graphic visual propaganda, a film poster integrates images, texts, colors and other code systems to express the artistic concept and inner meaning of the film, which is a meta visual image. In the 1990s, Kress and Leeuwen established a social semiotic framework for image analysis, which has provided a theoretical basis and analytical method for meta discourse analysis and has made the meta discourse analysis of film posters possible. In 2020, Chinese film Better Days was shown in Korea and Farewell My Concubine was replayed once again. At the same time, posters of these two films were redesigned. The meta discourse analysis method of Kress and Leeuwen was adopted in this paper to analyze the meanings of Korean posters of the two films in terms of reproduction, interaction and composition. The design features of the two Korean posters were summed up as follows through research: most Korean posters are actor-centered, hoping to attract viewers through stars; Korean posters know how to express inner emotions and are good at using manner to express emotions; Korean posters focus on presenting a certain “moment”, pictures from classic scenes are often used to design posters; Korean posters pursue a sense of beauty, pictures are simple and clean. LOGOs don't affect the whole posters, and are mostly handwritten. As for the Korean poster for Better Days, attention is paid to aesthetics in Korea. The poster is beautiful and romantic, but it does not properly reflect the content and meaning of the film itself. The design of the Korean poster for Farewell My Concubine is relatively successful, which is centered on Cheng Dieyi played by Leslie Cheung. The classic moment of singing The Drunken Concubine is chosen to highlight the inner emotions of the character. Therefore, the design of film posters should be consistent with the content and meaning of films. In addition to complying with local aesthetics, film posters should also be innovative and endowed with connotations of the times and socio-cultural significance.
