Extreme weather events are prone to cause cascading failure of power systems with renewable sources. This paper proposes a risk assessment method for power systems with renewable sources under extreme sand storm due to windstorm. First, the impact of sand storm on the output of photovoltaic is quantified. An improved probabilistic load flow model considering the frequency modulation was discussed. Then risk assessment method based on the improved probabilistic load flow is proposed to assess the risk of cascading failure. Finally, the proposed method is tested in an IEEE 39 bus system. Results indicate that the proposed method can effectively assess the risk of power systems with renewable sources under sand storm.
